Poll: Did you prepay your OB for delivery?

I know we've talked about the hospital requesting/demanding funds prior to delivery, but did your OB ask for a deposit for your delivery?

I had to switch OBs since my previous OB moved away, and this OB office is 'demanding' a deposit based on the costs they've calculated from my current insurance and what a normal vaginal delivery costs.

I'm just wondering if this has become the new standard practice or what because my previous OB never asked for this and I was stunned at how pushy the receptionist was about this.

P.S - And yes, I'm pg and K3 is due in July.

ETA: No FB please! Not ready to spill the beans.

Oh and I didn't prepay (RWG)

But mostly I just wanted to say Congrats!!!

  • Congrats! Yes, I had to pre-pay with DS. I was fine pre-paying my MD, but I refused to pre-pay Seton. Sorry she was pushy though--that sucks. You should ask to speak with the office manager next time you're there and let her know you were turned off by how the receptionist treated you.

  • congrats!

for your question, I had to pay a total OB-care type fee during one of my first appointments.  I can't remember the exact name of it (global OB or something), but basically it paid for all of my prenatal care, assuming a normal pregnancy (so all the routine appointments).  I'm sure one of the other RWG girls will remember this better than me.

I don't believe it had anything to do with actual labor/delivery though (I could be wrong).

as a side note, I was pg from Aug-May, and switched insurance in January to something that paid 100% global OB, so I ended up getting almost all of my money back from the OBs office.

  • Congrats!!!

    I pre-paid, but only owed my doctor a $40 co-pay, so it wasn't a big deal.

  • Wow!  Congrats!  :)

I did prepay my Dr, but it was only like $80 I think.  Maybe $120?  I didn't realize it was optional.  :)

I didn't owe anything to my OB's office so no idea if they usually require pre payments

  • Congratulations!  Yes, my OB required payment by the end of the second trimester.  It included all of the prenatal appointment costs as well, so I actually liked prepaying because I didn't owe anything for any of the subsequent visits (including the "extra" visits when I was overdue).  I was not required to prepay the hospital in Houston though.

Ummm, DITTO!!!  I'm way too excited to answer your question, but YAY!!!! Congrats!!

  • holyhell, I was only halfway through reading this and had already gotten my phone out to text you to tell you that you might be giving it away! lol...glad you 'fessed up. :p

To answer the question, yep, we had to prepay both times. SOP for my doc.

So, so, SOOO excited for you, momma!!

    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • Aaaahhhh!!!!  First, HUGE congrats!!!!  I'm so so excited for you!!!

Second, yep.  I prepaid for both deliveries.  It was the bottom dollar (uncomplicated vag. delivery) that I'd have to pay, regardless of what ended up happening.  My OB's office is great about refunding money so I had no issue with it.  I won't prepay the hospital though, because I feel like it's a bureaucratic nightmare and there are too many variables to account for when coming up with an estimated bill.

Eeeee!!!!  I'm beyond excited for you NDK!!!!!

  •  You all are so very sweet. Thanks for the well wishes.

It has taken a lot longer to sink in this time, even though I feel really sick.

Boxer, you don't have to be polite! Big Smile I just haven't really come out and blabbed it yet.

As for the prepay question, I thought the insurance would be billed for the visits (like last time) and I'd just pay any differences that might come along. FTR, this is also RWG.

  • I just saw your ticker in another post and was about to page you...congrats!!! I'm super excited for you! :)

I did prepay - both to my OB and the hospital. I cannot remember how much/when anything like that, but I know it was a significant amount of money up front.

    Congratulations again!!

  • I had to prepay both times. In Austin my doctor just required a set fee ($100) and in BR they billed my deductible and then the balance based on my insurance.

And hooray for you being "out" and for another adorable little K baby. Big Smile

  • YAYAYAY!! Congratulations! So excited for you!
  • You're such a sneaky little thing, NDK.

Yes, I prepaid the ob for both pregnancies w/ RWG.

  • Congrats!!

Yes, I did prepay my OB (WPIH).  It was a requirement.

I refuse to prepay the hospital though (in fact, I haven't pre-registered for that reason).

  • Congrats again, I'm so very happy for y'all!

We didn't have to pay anything for E, but since then they changed their policies I guess because with this last pregnancy they were going to have me pay my deductible ($2000) or set up a payment plan by the second visit.  I was super surprised too since it was completely different with E.

  • Yes, we have to prepay the OBs office by 28 weeks.

  • Hmmmm....appears my post was eaten.

    Congrats!!!  So excited for you!!!!!

I did pre-pay for both. It was actually an issue the second time around when I had GD since the pre-pay is an estimate based on uncomplicated vaginal delivery.  But when I was seeing the perinatologist for the GD, my insurance didn't reflect the pre-payment (since the services hadn't actually happened yet) so they still expected payment, although I'd already technically met my deductible.  Fortunately the peri's office was very used to this happening and was very flexible about it.  But didn't really seem fair to them.

  • Congrats!!!

I did pre-pay (WPIH) but with my insurance it was only $35 I think.
  • Yay!!!  Congrats!!  What a lucky baby K3 is!!
  • Congrats!!!!!!!!

Yes, I had to pre-pay both times.  My insurance only covers 80% so I was responsible for 20% for L&D plus my deductible.  My OB required full payment of what I would owe them (my 20%) by the end of my 2nd tri.  I was able to do it in 3 installments though, so it wasn't as big of a hit.  Also, be careful (well watch for it) when you do this.  What happened  is the OB took the money for my deductible but they don't actually submit it to insurance until after delivery.  But the hospital submitted the bill first so the insurance had me down as needing to pay the hospital the deductible, but I had already paid it to my OB. It was easy once i figured it out and the OB reimbursed me but it was stressful trying to figure it out at first.

  • What the what!?!?  That is so awesome :)  Congrats, N!

As for prepayment, yes, I had to pay up front. I think ARC's OBs work this way. I didn't have a problem with it, but they didn't bring it up until I was past 12 weeks. That might have been coincidence though.

  • Eeeeh! Congratulations!!!! H&H 8 months!! (I think I counted right) yay!
  • In Austin, we kind-of prepaid and then they had to refund a bunch of money because we moved before we delivered there.  Here, they don't prepay, but now they are suggesting I do "co-payments" at every visit (which I can decline) because it is a big chunk of money after delivery.  I think I'm going to decline because we will have saved the amount that our insurance doesn't cover by the time I deliver.

    Congrats on Baby K3!  :)

  • We're at the same practice & yes, I did pre-pay.  The main thing for me, though, was I was able to use up the remainder of my FSA for the OB (since I pre-paid in the fall of '08) & for the delivery at the hospital (since she was born in '09).  It actually worked out famously for us.

And HOOOOOOOOORAY!  I'm glad to cat is out of the bag!!

  • congrats!!!

i had to pay a portion of my OB's fees early on (maybe 13 weeks) and the rest i paid around 36 weeks. they already contacted my insurance to calculate how much i owed.

  • yay! glad you're out! congrats again! see how good i am at keeping secrets!! :-)

no advice on the pre-pay b/c i only had to pay copays, but yay, congrats!!

  • Yay! Congrats!!

With #1, I prepaid Dr & hospital. With #2 (different Dr, same hospital), I also prepaid Dr (don't remember exactly how much, but I don't remember it being a large sum), but did not prepay hospital.

  • Congrats!  When I went in for my first appt with OB 1, they mentioned from the getgo what I would have to pay by month three.  I ended up leaving that practice bc the OB was pregnant herself and wouldn't be around the majority of my pregnancy.  OB number two told me later into the pregnancy how much I would need to pay for my OB appts and my delivery lumped into one bill.  Since I was due after the new year they didn't ask for it at the beginning but just required me to pay it before my due date.  I don't think I ever got a bill for it or hassled to pay it.  I only ended up seeing a bill for the cost of delivery.
  • Congrats, I'm so excited for you.

  • haven't read all the other posts, but CONGRATS!!!!!

And for your question- that sounds fishy.  I mean, I know that certain billing entities definitely push for it (in my case it was the hospital pushing for it) but there is no way that they can make you pay for it- at least, not as far as I know.  I mean, what if you're out of town and you deliver early?  THere are so many factors that could change, it seems ridiculous for them to push for this.

In our case, we'll ultimately be covered under THREE different insurance policies by the time DD2 gets here so there is NO WAY I would trust them to do that correctly.  As it is, I already anticipate digging through all those fun bills when they come in to make sure all is 100% correct before anyone gets a cent.

And congrats again - I'm so so happy for you! :)
