IBS anyone?

I was just wondering if any of you have IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome - I still hate that name even after having it for 15 years!). My doctor told me that IBS-D symptoms can change with pregnancy. Some women will even develop it for the first time in pregnancy. Since I got on prenatals I have been off of my medicine and feeling alot better (I think it is the iron). However, the past few days have been bad. I haven't changed anything about my diet, so I am afraid that now that I am in the 2nd trimester things have changed back to how they were. Before I got pregnant my doctor said she wouldn't want me on my old meds because they aren't safe for the baby.

Anyone else dealing with this?

Re: IBS anyone?

  • Yes! Mine is because I had my gall bladder out last year and have had Ibs since but I have good days and bad days never know when it's gonna hit. Really a pain

  • Raising my hand. I also have colitis, and my gut's been quite annoying lately. I've had two mini flares since becoming pregnant, and have had to rely on Immodium some days. You're supposed to go into remission when you're pregnant! These symptoms and the aching, the tiredness and the mental anguish does not help my poor pregnant body :(

  • *waving*    I have mild IBS  and this past week has gotten really bad that I am in pain and sometimes am afraid I won't make it to the bathroom.   I hate having to keep track of everything I eat just in case that may be "the thing"  that sets it off and to make sure I don't eat it again.   It is very frustrating as I didn't have this with my first 3  (developed after)   I just hope its all ok for baby :)

  • Oh yes, definitely an IBSer here.  I used to get flare ups once a month and that was 'under control'.  First 2 months though i had no flare ups and i was wondering if it was gone for pregnancy or what, then boom - flare up.

I was never on IBS medicine, just pretty strict with my diet.  I have noticed however that since pregnant i've been off my benefiber (took it every morning before) but as soon as I went off during month 3, the IBS actually cleared up for a while.  Since i've been off i've had no more flare ups.  I even eat 'warning' foods occasionally with no problems yet in month 4.

I figure it will come and go per usual through pregnancy.  I'm not taking iron and my IBS ran more towards C, with D flare ups so iron scares me (since it can cause constipation).

I do hate IBS, the cramping is extra scary when you have a little one inside!  I hope you find something that works out for you!

Immodium is what I was taking and my doctor said not to. You might want to check and make sure it is ok.

  • I asked both my GI and my OBGYN, just to be sure, and they both said it was fine as long as a) it was occasional, and b) I drink more water to compensate.

Wish I could make a deal with someone to be rid of my symptoms, just throughout this pregnancy..

  • I developed and was diagnosed with IBS-D in 2004 after I had emergency intestinal surgery for a strangulated bowel... In any event, I too was told that it can change during pregnancy and even go away. Although I wish I didn't have IBS anymore, mine has done a complete 180 from IBS-D to IBS-C. I stopped taking my meds a couple years ago, because I was able to determine which foods were my triggers. Now I have no idea what to do because no matter what I eat (including previous trigger foods) the constipation is horrible. I know the prenatals definitely were playing a huge part in the constipation so I switched to flinstones, but even with them I still get the constipation.

  • My IBS went away during my last two pregnancies, but not the case this time around. Since I went off my meds, my stomach has been bad. In addition, I have to take prenatals without iron, or it's really bad.
