Pregnant after a Loss

how does the magic unisom/b6 combo work?

Hi ladies!

I am desperate. This nausea is absolutely kicking my butt.  The gingerale, ginger chews and crackers just aren't cutting it this week.  I have eaten a total of 3 baked potatoes and a thing of won ton soup over the last 4 days.  This is not healthy for me or my little munchkin.

I have seen a few ladies mention the unisom/B6 combo to help with nausea and m/s.  How does it work?  Is this something my OB should prescribe or is it widely accepted as safe?  How much do I take?  I browsed around online a bit, but haven't found a whole lot on it... and while the unisom (25 mg pill at night whole or cut in half) was fairly consistant... the info on the B6 varied widely from "don't even both with it" to taking it 3x/day.

Has anyone used this for their m/s?  Is it the almighty cure-all that I am praying for.   Realistically, I know there is no cure-all, but if I can find something that will enable me to choke down at least some form of nutritious meal/snack even once a day, I would be so thrilled.

**also, DH (love him) did pick up some pedialyte popsicles for me so at least I am getting some sort of nutrients... but I know that's really not good enough and I miss food so much.

  • Thanks so much for your response!!!

I just begged DH to go find sea bands.  I will try just about anything.

I think I am going to try the Unisom/B6 thing starting tonight and double check with my OB tomorrow or maybe wait until my first appt.  Not sure.  It seems pretty widely accepted as "safe"... but the reviews on whether or not it is effective are mixed.  As long as it isn't harmful to LO, I think it's worth a shot.

  • sorry you are feeling lousy...I hear ya in the department for sure! I tried B6 but have not tried the unisom....I don't really notice a difference with the b6. My OB prescribed phenergan from my last pregnancy after I tried everything under the sun (including sea bands) and nothing worked.  They never suggested the unisom...instead wrote the phenergan script.  Last time I took a whole pill at night, then a half as needed the next day (bc it does make you sleepy). What a difference. I have started taking it again this time as well but since I am still early am only on a half a pill at night...then half as needed during the day. I hate having to take medication...but I was seriously miserable and missing work...and I think there comes a point where it just isn't healthy anymore.  I hope you get some relief from the unisom...let me know how that works!

  • Thanks ladies!!!

@coastal, I will definitely let you know if it works.  Worst case, I have my first visit on the 14th and if no improvement by then, I will be begging for something.  I have to take my boards on the 16th... and there is no way I can sit through that exam while gagging and dry heaving every 10 minutes.

I'm all for toughing things out and generally agaist medication (same as my cold before)... but you're absolutely right- there comes a point where it is not healthy and "toughing it out" is much worse for you and LO than giving in to pharmacological assistance.

  • I didn't notice that the B6 helped me all that much, but unisom is amazing...not only could I sleep at night, I would feel good the entire next day.  I just never allowed myself to take them everyday because I didn't want to mess up my sleep or get dependent.  I also found this amazing supplement at the health food store called Morning Ease by Soloray and it has Ginger, Peppermint, Artichoke, B6, and a couple of other things in it and when I take it, it alleviates my nausea.  Those two things have been the best for me, that and eating pickles and drinking V8.  I think the salty things seemed to curb my nausea a little bit.  Hope you get some relief!

I just wanted to chime in and say that Pedialyte pops have sugar and electrolytes, but you might try something like Ensure to get some protein in there too. Might be worth a try! If you can just sip at that over time or make it into a smoothie or something. My buddy had bad morning sickness and I remember talking about her trying that.
thank you and good suggestions. unfortunately right now anything milky make me gag . I am slowly starting to do okay with fruity or sour stuff, so the pops are working. Once I can get past the aversion to milk, I will definitely switch to Ensure. Thanks again.
