3rd Trimester

anyone measuring behind?

Hello all!

I just started my weekly dr appointments which I'm happy about because it means I get to meet my little guy soon! Everything seems to be going well so I know I shouldn't be worried, but I am a worrier and I overthink everything!

So I know that you're supposed to be about the same cm as you are weeks. Yesterday I was 34w5d and I was measuring 33cm. I asked the doctor about this who wasn't concerned and she said that plus or minus 2 is OK. Anyone else experience this? If you were behind, did the baby "catch up" during the next appointments?

Re: anyone measuring behind?

  • Yes, I went to the doctor yesterday at 35w3d and I was measuring at 34cm.

  • With my first pregnancy I started measuring behind by about 3 weeks. I had an ultrasound and everything was fine. I was worried but no problems. I delivered the day after my due date with a healthy 8 lb 9 oz baby. So I'm not sure where she was hiding (I'm not tall...), but everything was fine. Don't worry until they tell you to worry. Most of the time all is well.

  • I am only measuring 30 so I'm going in for a growth us next week.

  • I have been consistently measuring 2 cm small for months.  There's nothing to be concerned about.

  • I measured 33 Monday, at 36w3d, and no one is worried at this point.  I actually measured 34 two weeks prior, also.  Different people measuring, different position of baby, how far down baby is, where you carry weight even, how much fluid, can all have an impact on what you measure in general or on any given day- and like PP said, most providers only worry 2-4 cm off either way or an unexplained stop in growth.  For me, it was attributed to different people, kid being low in birth canal and having her back to mine at the time.

  • at my 35 wk. appt. I was measuring 32-33.  Dr. sent me for a growth ultrasound which was normal.  The next appointment at 36 wks. I measured on track.  Then at 38 wks I was measuring small again.

I think it has to do with how the baby is positioned and if it's within a few centimeters usually is fine.

My MW said that anything plus or minus two is considered normal.

The fundal measurement is not the most accurate measurement in the grand scheme of things.  It can be off simply because of human error, because the baby drops or changes position or any number of reasons.

Your doctor told you not to worry.  Take her advice on this one.
