Preemies

What's new with you today?

How are you ladies?  I've been swamped at work this week and haven't been able to play as much.  Today is slower and I need some entertainment.  So what's doing on with you today?

Re: What's new with you today?

  • Hi B...I was actually gonna page you today because I have a NICU question that maybe you'll be able to answer.  Aiden has been extubated for three weeks now (yay!) and they keep weaning his settings on the nasal IMV, which I am thankful for.  However, this morning (and a few other times in the last few weeks) he had two episodes where stimulation didn't work and they had to bag him.  Did you deal with this with Hilyer?  It worries me a lot.  I will talk to the neo about it, but I am wondering how common this is.

Sorry to hijack your post.  I hope you and the boys are doing well.

    Hey lady!

Hilyer was bagged many times.  While in his oxygen environment (isolette) and while on nasal canula.  They basically said sometimes they just get tired and their bodies are focusing on other things.  Is he still on his caffeine?  I'm guessing so, but has it be adjusted lately for his weight gain?

I've actually bagged Hilyer a couple of times.  It's scary, but I think it's fairly common with preemie lungs like our boys have.

It does get better, I promise.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your response.  He was actually taken off caffeine about a week ago when his HR was really high.  Ever since they took him off, his HR is pretty much back to normal.  The neo said that she doesn't think the caffeine helps him enough to keep him on it if his HR gets crazy.

I have to find out if the bagging was done during a feeding.  That would make me feel a bit better.  Ugh, these poor guys and their little lungs.

Thanks B.  Your responses really help me deal with things quite often.

How is your day going?  Anything new going on?

  • Today was PT in our house. It actually went well B behaved himself and didn't show much stranger anxiety at all. PT was impressed with both of their skills and how much they've improved since her last visit.

Other then that I am doing laundry, going to pick up our Christmas pics from Sears and get anxious about moving. I can't wait until next week!

My day is dragging by.  Probably because I'm exhausted.  The boys have colds and aren't sleeping well, which means momma isn't sleeping well.

My big news is that Hilyer is up to 9lb11oz as of yesterday.  Woo Hoo!  We're going to hit double digits soon Smile

Boo for being swamped at work!  :(

Not much happening here today - we're taking it easy, especially since J is on round 2 of antibiotics plus a steroid now.  IDK what we're going to do if this cough doesn't clear up with this round, and I have a gut feeling that we'll end up on a neb yet this winter.  I can't complain too much though - we're getting her caught up developmentally, and her pancreatic function is still normal so that's huge for us.

Don't be afraid of the neb.  Hilyer is on maintenance meds 2x a day and we use albuterol as needed.  He and JS keep passing a cold back and forth.  At the first sign of a cough, we start the treatments.  I honestly think it's what's kept him out of the hospital.

Great news about her development and pancreas!  The pancreas is a tricky, tricky organ and can cause lots of pain when it acts up.

  • I'll play. It has been a heck of a week here. BHiyler you were right, thank goodness. No Stroke!!!!! That is the good news, bad news is that is vascular. So, we were refered yet again to have more test run to get a baseline. That was today and we go back in a few months to re-do the test and then compare. Of course then we have to go over "ways to fix it" and all the what ifs... which sucks the life out of you.

On a happier note, we are going to get our Christmas tree this weekend. We didnt get one last year because I lived in the NICU. so it will be our first family christmas tree and I cannot wait!
