Parenting after a Loss

It is now almost 10:00 and DD has been eating since 2:40...

...with no more than a 20 minute break between feeds, more often only 5-10 minutes. I'm grateful that this has kept her from screaming (well except during those breaks) but it's getting old!

  • Are you sure she is nursing/eating/swallowing during that time?  She may be using you as a pacifier.  You might want to consider trying a paci, and if she refuses it then offer boob.  Make sure you put on lanolin after the marathon sessions too if you are sore.  glad she is fussing less, hope you can get some sleep tonight.

  • Ouch, 6 week growth spurt, maybe?  If it is, hopefully she'll sleep really well for you after it passes!
  • We had many of these marathon cluster feeding sessions. One once lasted 36 hours.

    How is your supply generally?

This happened to me for a couple reasons. One, I didn't have enough milk for her, and two, she refused to take a pacifier so she was using me as one.

    I feel for your nipples.

  • I feel for you, mama.  Cluster feedings are really something else, huh?

I may be alone here, but I think her using you as a paci is OK at this point.  That helps build your milk supply for a growth spurt.  Its butt numbing and hard on you, but get as comfy as you can knowing that this will pass.  This is only temporary, promise.

My advice- become one with Netflix.  I watched nine seasons of Roseanne in the course of a month and a half.

  • OMG it lasted almost all night! I thought I had experienced cluster feedings before but this is ridiculous. I finally got her to stop long enough to get ready for bed at 10:30, then I fell asleep and woke at 3:00 AM to find her still firmly attached and sucking away.

I have no idea how much she ate that time, but when I made her stop to change her diaper she screamed like she was starving until I put her back on. Then more solid eating until 7:45. And she's eating again now at 8:10.

I wish she would take a paci but she hates them, I have tried all different brands, had other people give them to her, tried forcing her to keep it in her mouth but she will not use them.

I am guessing this was a combo of 6 week growth spurt and nursing for comfort. At her doctor's appointment yesterday she had gained 5 oz. since her last appt. 9 days prior so she is gaining!

  • Whoa! definetly sounds like the six week growth spurt. I was in tears bfing during that week and saw significant increase in my milk production. Few days ago, DS has been eating for more like 10 to 15mins. He is still fussy at night from 8 to 10pm. I think it is because my milk is low at night. I am definitely more engorged in the morning and it decreases as the day goes on.

  • Hugs no advice, my milk never came in with Ian. And with Ollie due to medication I am on, I chose not to breast fed. Though my milk came in and ouch.

My life has a superb cast but I can't figure out the plot.
  • The same thing happened to me with Nolan I chalked it up to a growth spurt but then after a few days he wanted me to just be his pacifier and the ped told me after a few days to cut him off after 25 minutes and don't let him back on for 2 hours.  I tried it and it worked perfectly.  GL to you and Winter :)

  • ((Hugs)) I definitely had some similar marathon sessions. Exhausting! Others have given good advice. I can only say this too shall pass. There were days when I was BFing literally every hour for 24 hours during the 5 weeks or so, but that's now stopped. Definitely load on the lanolin!
