2nd Trimester

Ibuprofen.. NOT in 3rd tri, but okay in 1st & 2nd?

I'm getting mixed information on google... (stupid google)

It says Ibuprofen is HARMFUL in the 3rd tri because it can close part of the baby's heart and possibly cause premature labor..

But what about 1st and 2nd tri..?  I haven't found anything about that, but I imagine it's not good.  I took some by mistake yesterday- (I asked DH for tylenol and he handed me that.. didn't realize it till after I took it).

Sorry if this gets asked a lot

  • I've always been told to stay away from ibuprofen throughout, but interested in others' answers.

  • From what I understand, ibuprofen is never a good idea. My OB instructed me from the get-go to take Tylenol only. (And I haven't even taken that.)

  • My OB was very clear that I should only take tylenol, never ibuprofen.  I think if you only had one or two though you're fine (according to the googles!) call your doc if you're worried but I'm sure it's okay :-)

  • No no no, absolutely not.  I always heard that it was MOST dangerous in the first trimester because it increases miscarriage risk significantly.  And in the third trimester because of the heart.  And it's not good in the second trimester either, for the same reasons.  One dose probably won't cause you any problems, but don't do it again.  Giving up Advil has been the #1 hardest thing about pregnancy for me.  I have a chronic pain condition and Advil is the only thing that gives me any kind of relief.  But I haven't taken even one dose.  I miss it like crazy!  I dream about it the way other people dream about sushi and cocktails.

  • That's why you should listen to your DR and not google.

My Dr said Tylenol yes.  Ibuprofin -no. The entire 9mo.  ER dr told me that too last night when I was there being checked after minor car accident yesterday.

  • Ibuprofen is a no, as is any NSAID (aka anything good, lol)

Tylenol is the only one that doesn't cross the placenta apparently. I haven't taken any at all, my pains so far are all manageable (and I doubt tylenol would work anyway. Ibuprofen is my go-to when I need something).

I'm sure one time isn't a huge deal, just don't take any more.

  • You should only take tylenol based products while pregnant.  No ibeprofen.  Don't google.  Ask your doctor.  The doctor told me only tylenol products.

  • I was also told no ibuprofen I honestly do not think two will harm the baby but if it would make you feel better call your doctor about it.
  • Do me a favor, stop looking up health info. on Google and call your Dr.'s office.  Ibuprofen is NEVER okay while pregnant...1st, 2nd or 3rd trimesters.
  • I have always been told to stay away from ibuprofen. I was told that the only thing that is safe is Tylenol, but I wouldn't stress about accidentally taking it once.

Not entirely true. An excellent reference is:  https://www.otispregnancy.org/files/ibuprofen.pdf. Sorry, tried to make Clicky, but iPad isn't cooperating.

One dose of ibuprofen is highly unlike to cause harm. Some women, like myself take aspirin (also an NSAID) on doctor's orders for clotting disorders and such. But, stick to Tylenol - much simpler.

  • Thanks for the responses everyone- I didn't take it on purpose and I usually do call my doctor, but I feel like I've been bugging the crap out of her lately and I couldn't find the "list" she gave me of safe meds.  I know there is mixed information on google, but it's good to do some research for yourself as well and that's all I was trying to do.. thanks again ladies!

  • My first OB told me Ibuprofen is ok until 3rd tri, but the OB I switched to says absolutely no Ibuprofen at all.  I trust her judgment more than the first OB (obvs, since I switched to her).

  • It's something you really need to discuss with you're OB.  Technically, you shouldn't use it without a doctor's OK.

I have a bad back & pregnancy makes it worse.  With my 1st preg, my doc OK'ed me to use Ibu in 1st & 2nd tri, only when absolutely necessary, because Tylenol didn't work for me.

  • My answer will deviate:

I'm on my 2nd pregnancy in 3 years and both of my doctors said some IB is fine.  My current Dr. said one pill at the onset of a headache with something to eat is okay until 32 weeks.  He did also say that everything official will say to avoid it because the offices are all fearful of being sued since so many people can't moderate their consumption of anything.

I took it occasionally with my first son and he's here and wonderful- mostly.  He's 2, so he's not always so wonderful.

  • The research you are referring to is relatively new (Cat B/B/D - by trimester).  That's why most OB's aren't even aware of it.

  • Doctor said only tylenol.
One time probably won't hurt you, but don't take it again.

  • My midwife said no ibuprofen or Aleve past 20 weeks. She said before that it is fine but absolute no no past that time. :)
  • I wouldn't be concerned with one accidental dose...you are supposed to ply use acetaminophen/ Tylenol though.....
