after 3 months of contemplating to get or not to get the helmet, trying to correct his flat head ourselves, insurance issues, etc. we got the helmet! he's had it on for 1 week and already grew 3mm (our goal is 16mm total). Hopefully he only has to wear it for 7 more weeks. all in all. happy with my decision.
Re: Adden's helmet pic!
OMG how freaking cute!!!!!! that's awesome growth--way to go!!
So how bad does the flat spot have to be for them to suggest a helmet--I've often wondered. My LO has a 'flat' area--but not sure it's flat "enough"???

Thanks!
his doctor said the "normal" percentage for standard scale at his age is 92%, Adden was at 99.6%. So he fell in the moderate-severe category. I knew his head was flat but didn't know how flat until we saw a specialist. If you are worried or curious it's always good to ask the doc for advice
You are very lucky to have your insurance cover it. Ours didn't. His StarBand is costing us $2,850 (which was also weighing on the should we/should we not get it)... But in the long run we know it's best for him. For the first couple days we had it on and off every hour to get him use to the helmet and to look for any allergic reactions. Day 3 is when he started wearing it for around 23 hours a day. I was surprised at how well he got acustomed to it. It doesn't bother him at all and sleeps even better now with it on, then before (i'm assuming his head was cold at night without it?). Now that he has it on and we have started the process I feel like we will breeze through this. I do believe this decision is a lot harder on the parents then the child. Good Luck to you and your little one!
That price is ridiculous. You know the ins. company, if it were covered, would only pay like $200 for it. I'm sorry you had to pay out of pocket.
Yes, I am flaming insurance companies. I have had enough of their crap this year to last me a lifetime -- and we are well covered!
He looks adorable! DS #1 wore 2 DOC Bands for severe plagio (20mm of asymmetry). He wasn't phased by them at all, it was harder on his parents
If you have a Cranial Tech nearby they will do a free evaluation. This will help you understand the measurements.
