What provider do you have? My 15 y/o was just upgraded to a smart phone (on his Dad's plan) after much discussion because we felt that that is the way that technology is going. It's not an iPhone, but a Samsung 4G maybe?

Have you considered Virgin mobile? They have a new one, the Motorola Triumph. I think the phone s around $250, but you will get unlimited data, texts and something like 500 min. a month. It's only $45 a month with no contract
Sorry, I'm no help. I'm only familiar with the phones from AT&T and T-Mobile.

We got our 10 year old a new phone this summer. It's not a smart phone.
We just went to Verizon and talked to them about our options and looked at the Verizon store on line and got one that was free with our plan. It's a Samsung Intensity in electric blue and he loves it.
I would go to your local Verizon store or online and see what your "free" options are.
Stay at home mom to a house of boys: two amazing stepsons, 12 and 9, and our 4 year old.

He might like something like the cosmos touch. Or if you are going to get him a smart phone something like the LG vortex
