Pregnant after a Loss

A/S before 20 weeks

So, today at my regular OB appointment, my OB made a face when I told her that we were doing our anatomy scan at 18.5 weeks at  the MFM's office.  I asked her if that was an issue and she just said that sometimes they can't get as good of images before 20 weeks.  I also know that she is not crazy about my MFM (her office actually refers out to a different perinatologist, but we really like this guy and I was referred to him with my last pregnancy by my old OB).  So, now I'm trying to decide if we should reschedule the appointment to later.  We already know gender, so that isn't really an issue, but I would  like to get an "all  clear" before Christmas, but if we wait until 20 weeks we'd be doing it after. So, my question for you ladies, anyone have the A/S between 18-19 weeks and if so, were there any issues with getting complete/ good images?

ETA: My MFM is the one who suggested doing the scan at 18.5 weeks.

TIA!

Re: A/S before 20 weeks

  • We had ours at 18 weeks and it was fine.  I don't understand why they would have an issue with you having the scan before 20 weeks.

  • My OB requested we wait until 20 weeks so that's what we did.  We still had to go back a week later because they were unable to get great views of our daughter's heart.  So it can go either way no matter how far along you are.
  • We had ours at 19 weeks. The tech also commented that it's better done at 20+ weeks, but she was able to get all the pictures she needed, no problem. Worst case is they have you back for a follow-up.

  • my OB wanted to schedule mine after 20 weeks, but due to work conflicts we were able to push it up a week so DH could come. My OB was concerned he wouldn't be able to get great shots of the heart before 20 weeks, but it ended up being fine. We did have to come back for a second scan, but only because she was being stubborn and he wasn't 100% about the sex.

  • Thanks, all! This helps.  It's good to hear that they can tell whether they need you to come back or not. I was afraid that they would tell me "all  good" (hopefully), but then I'd have to worry that they missed something because it was too early and worry for the next 20 weeks....

After my last pregnancy, I said I wouldn't worry about every little thing since really, it's only the beginning of the worry (there's a lot more when they are outside babies), but I can't seem to help myself....

    Thanks again!

  • I had mine at exactly 18 weeks and what they could see was all good, but they didn't get good enough shots of the nose, mouth, and certain heart views, so they scheduled me for another at 19w5d.  They also coudln't be sure about the sex, so luckily for nosey me I will get a chance to find out again this coming Monday!

  • I had my a/s just shy of 18 weeks and didn't have any issues with getting the necessary measurements.  I didn't have another u/s until 34 weeks so at a certain point I started to get nervous about whether the first u/s was accurate, but everything was fine at my later u/s.

  • We had ours at 18w and got amazing shots. As you can see from siggy. They got all the measurements they needed and Syd opened up for a min to show her girlie bits. She was measuring on the bigger side, but even with DD1 18w wasn't an issue for the a/s.

  • With my first child (stillborn) we had hers done at 19 weeks and everything turned out on it. They could see everything. With this new baby boy we are going one at 16 weeks and again at 20 just to check everything. I would keep your appointment as is. If they are not happy with the out come for whatever reason they will make it a point for you to come back in. Who doesn't love more pictures!
  • I had mine last week at 19wk2d and the Perinat. was able to get all the shots he needed and it went great!  He even switched it to 3D for us to get a pic of LO's face.

  • Mine is scheduled for Friday (17w4d), per my peri's orders.  His office standard is around 18 weeks - he can usually see what he needs to see and likes to leave extra time for further testing as necessary.  If they don't see what they need, they have you back, but they can usually identify anything that needs to be followed.  Given that the peri is the expert, and that my peri is particularly sought out for diagnostic level II's, I'm going with his opinion on this (not that my OB had any issues with it!).

  • I had mine with DS at 18w and there was no problem getting the measurements. I was kind of surprised they made me wait until 20w this time (different OBs.)  I wouldn't reschedule, I would think the MFM knows what they are talking about!  GL!
