Do you work from home?

If so, can I just ask, "HOW???"

I've been trying to work from home the last two days while staying home with DS, who is sick with croup. He does play well independently, but I can't just ignore him all day while I try and work. I've tried working with him sitting on my lap, but he just tries to eat the books I'm working on, or the pencil, or the desk, or the keyboard, etc. Yesterday I was able to work while he napped, but after getting only three hours of sleep last night, I collapsed today while he slept.

Hats off to anyone who works from home while also watching their kid(s). I'd love to stay home. I love working. I just can't do both at once.

Dear Bump: You suck.

im with you, its really hard to work from home.

I do think some companies have regulations that kids under a certain age have to be in childcare.

  • I work nights and weekends.  There's no way I could do this during the day, when its just me and Layna.  I'd have to completely ignore her and that just wouldn't work.

I worked from home a few times when Jakob was sick and I didn't put in a full day at all.  I could maybe get in a couple hours while he was sleeping.

  • I'm lucky b/c my hours are when the kids are asleep. Granted, that takes a toll during weeks like these when I'm putting 40 hours in late at night and first thing in the morning on top of taking care of the boys during the day. But, this week is an exception, not the rule.

DH works from home on occasion, if I need to take one of the boys to an appt. alone or if I have to do something sans kids. When that is the case, his office is really great about him working outside office hours, as well (nap time and then from 5pm until whenever he puts in his hours).

  • I worked from home when DS was born. My mom came every day and watched him from 8-5 for the first ~10 months then I went SAHM. I can't imagine trying to work from home and take care of DS by myself. I remember my boss at the time saying I could work from home and take care of the baby and he didn't have a problem with that and I was like "yeah right! no way can I handle that." I know people at my previous job who worked from home that had older kids that they would supervise say after school or nap and after school time. I can see maybe making that work for a few hours a day if you had a pretty cush job. But if you are expected to be doing conference calls with clients and stuff....not so sure the occasional interruptions would go over well. At least I wouldn't be comfortable with it.

DH works from home when he is home, but he is 100% working in his office and I am 100% taking care of DS and the house.

  • thank you. :)

While DH and I both work from home, it is not easy - even though there are two of us. Conference calls around nap times are always fun too. :)

  • I work form home- but A is in school and J goes to daycare 2 days a week.  Those are my big work days.  Other days I only work during naps and after the are in bed.  I could not be a good mom or employee if I tried to work while taking care of them.  Well, I do answer email from time to time while he is up- but that's it.  Anything more they need to be out of the house, asleep or DH home watching them.
  • I don't work while the kids are awake.  If I do, it's for 10-15 minutes, tops, while they watch something on TV.  I work during nap time, when DH is home after work, or while the kids go to the gym day care (and I sit in the lounge area working).

  • i don't work while i am responsible for the kids unless they are asleep.  i can't imagine how frustrating it would be for them (and me) if they were trying to share my attention with clients/work.
