Parenting after a Loss

AW: He figured it out!

So for the better part of a week now D has been shoving his hand into his mouth.  At first it was whatever part would make it in, around Thanksgiving it was the nub of his thumb (thumb tucked under the fingers).  Then, last night, I happened to look down and see this:

Sorry for the picture quality, I literally looked down saw what he was doing and grabbed my phone.  He got the thumb in!  Granted its at quite the angle, but its in...and he did it several times over.

FX this means I'm not his only pacifier anymore.

  • Awww...cute picture!

DD is a thumb sucker too.  I figured it was one or the other. The upside to the thumb is that I can leave the house and not have to worry about if I have enough pacis, it's there when she needs it and I'm not chasing it down in the crib at night.  She really only does it when she gets sleepy or is in a new situation she's trying to figure out.

The downside, I can't cut off the thumb when it's time to give it up.  However, my Mom said that one day, I just stopped and that she didn't have to do anything.

DH was a thumb sucker as was one of my brothers.  Not sure when DH gave it up.  My brother did it longer than he was supposed to, but he gave it up eventually.

Totally agreeing with you on the up and downsides.  I'm just glad I'm not his sole way of soothing himself anymore.

  • Aw so cute! Winter hates pacis but I'm reluctant to encourage thumbsucking, it's covenient and it would be nice to give my nipples a ret, but it's such a hard habit to break. For now she's still using her whole hand, sometimes she sucks on her forearm ;)

Anytime I've tried a paci with DS he literally spits it out.  Its kind of comical, actually.  I haven't really been encouraging thumbsucking, but I haven't been discouraging it either.  Figure whatever will be, will be.

This was us too.  We tried several pacis, even the nipple of her bottle.  She'd gag, spit it out and give us the crusty eyeball.  Saying "I'm not stupid.  There's nothing coming out of this thing".  We didn't encourage it, but didn't discourage it either.  It started with the fist/knuckles then she found the thumb.  It is what it is to us.

  • Hope that you get a break now!  I was a thumb sucker for a long time (5yrs or so!).  DS may or may figure this out on this own. I am not for or against this. Will just go with what he decides!

That is exactly what he does, especially when I try to give one to him.  It would be comical if I wasn't his pacifier so frequently.  The funny thing is that even more than being relieved at a possible reprieve I'm proud of him for figuring this out.  He's been working at it for awhile and last night it finally clicked.
