Anyone have a biter?

The girl were not biters, but over the past week or so Drew has begun biting. I know a lot is his age as well as the frustration of him not being able to communicate, but he needs to stop biting, We did time out last night which didn't phase him at all, telling him no and showing him the spot where he bit. Any other tips? Or is this one of those things he just has to outgrow?

Re: Anyone have a biter?

  • DD was a biter too.  Sometimes she bit b/c she was teething and Motrin helped a lot with that.  Otherwise, I just tried to help her find the words that were causing the frustration.  Eventually she started saying them herself.  I also had to watch her really closely in certain situations b/c she would bite, e.g. if she was playing with her brother and they started to fight over a toy.
    DS1 age 7, DD age 5 and DS2 born 4/3/12
  • DD#2 was a biter (and still is once in a while).  The only person she ever bit was DD#1.  It was usually when she was cutting teeth (especially the molars) and frustrated.  She generally didn't bit when she wasn't teething - like something about the pain triggered her realizing she could bite?  I dunno.  Try advil or something if he's teething.  We tried time outs and even spankings twice (I know not a bumpie acceptable thing), but nothing worked except taking away things she loved.  One time she wasn't allowed to go swimming for a day while DD#1 did get to go swimming.  She was devastated.  It decreased from there.  Mostly, we've tried to neutralize the situation earlier than we used to and kept reinforcing what to do when she was frustrated/mad/sad/whatever.  BUT she was a lot more verbal than DS at this age.  DS is starting to hit and pull hair and we're having the same problem.  Nothing phases him.  Part of it is attention, I know, but he doesn't seem to understand it hurts the girls (or me).  Does Drew understand it hurts?  Can you put him in a pnp or something and walk away?  Is it for attention or frustration or both?  Let me know if you find a way to deal with it...
