Natural Birth

Anyone ever switch from OB to a Midwife at 26+ weeks???

Hello,

This is my first time ever posting on this broad, but I have been on the bump a while (TK even longer). I really really want a natural birth- no meds, being able to move around, no use of any instruments ect....

Right now I am going to an OB actually I see more then one doc its more like 5 or 6. They are ok of course some are better then others, but I just hate that I have not really made any type of connection with any of them. I feel like every time I bring something up its rushed threw really fast, and my feelings are not really taken seriously because I'm a FTM....I thought about going to a midwife but being 26 weeks 27 tomorrow I'm a little worried.....

Have anyone ever made a switch like this soooo close to the end? Did you like the end result? TIA

  • I switched at 31 weeks. my midwife is amazing she's super attentive and helpful. whenever I have any questions I can just call or text message her and she's always there (unless she's at a birth but if it's an emergency she's still there to help.) I am SO glad I switched. my OB seemed to always forget things we discussed, she was always rushed and checking her watch and she brushed off my questions and concerns as if they were unimportant.

  • I switched at 36 weeks with DS, although it was from (hospital-based) midwife to (homebirth) midwife. I did not "like" the end result -- I loved loved LOVED the end result. My only regret was that I waited so long to make the switch!

I saw an OB practice like you were talking about with my DD, where there were 6 OBs and I would get whoever was on call during labor. It worked out OK, because I ended up being induced and was able to choose to deliver with my favorite OB -- the only one who I had really made a connection with. That was very lucky. I would never choose a practice like that again. I like feeling that the person catching my baby (or watching me catch it, LOL) could actually pick me out in a crowd, and I don't think that's possible when you have six doctors to meet and only ~15 prenatal appointments in which to do it.

  • I'm 20 weeks and in the process of changing - they try to make it as smooth and easy as possible for you.  The sooner you get started the better!  Best of luck for you!

  • Switched at 30 weeks and sooo glad I did!  LOVED my midwife and had the birth I had hoped for.  Go for it!

  • I switched around 30 weeks and my friend switched at 35 weeks...it was a great decision for both of us.  If you are having these feelings I would highly encourage you to make the switch!

  • I switched from a hospital based MW practice to a homebirth MW at 25 weeks with my first.  It was literally the BEST decision I made during my last pregnancy...and one of the best decisions I have made in my life.

You really are not THAT close...you still have 3 plus months to go...and pretty soon you will start seeing your MW more often which will give you even more time to get to know her.

  • I switched at 28 weeks. You should do whatever makes you most comfortable.

  • I switched around that point and I'm very glad I did.  She spent way more time with me and her philosophies were much more in line with what I wanted for my pregnancy and birth.  In my situation if I had stuck with an OB, I probably would have ended up with an induction and c/s.  Instead, I went into labor on my own and had a med-free, vaginal delivery.  It's not that late, go ahead and make the switch.  As a PP pointed out, now is when you start going in for appts. more frequently so you'll end up seeing the MW more than your previous doctors.

Congratulations!!! I made the switch late in the game as well for the same reasons and have been more than thrilled. My hubby wasn't completely in favor of switching but now he's completely in love with our midwife. I wrote about our journey to finding the prenatal care I desired on our blog here: https://www.cookinwiththejohnstons.com/2011/11/our-journey-to-prenatal-care.html

Best of luck with your decision and the rest of your pregnancy!

Thanks for sharing this I enjoyed reading it...Like your DH, mines is on the fence about switching but I have very high hopes for the appointment and I'm sure he will love them to...Not to mention they deliver at a totally different hospital and its one that we wanted to go to in the first place....

  • I switched at 35 weeks but I also had no choice... DH is in the military and we moved when I was 35 weeks pregnant. At the new hospital the only person with an open appointment to see me was the midwife. It worked out great though because I had already planned on going natural.
