The Car

I'm curious about how you handle the car ride with the LO?  When both of us are in the car one rides in the back....for two reasons...1) the way the passenger seat has to be for the car seat lends to a very close dashboard ride, not fun. 2) I feel until LO can hold onto his toys or grasp the car situation, riding back there and chatting with him isn't so bad. It is mainly number one but I also feel if we can reassure him early on that he's ok in the car then he'll get more comfortable when I speak to him from the front and driving alone. I may be totally wrong in my thinking and "spoiling" my little dude but I'll be the one to have to deal with it when the time comes. What do you do when there are two of you in the car?

Re: The Car

  • With 2 car seats in the back, DD has no choice but to be either on her own or with her sister.

  • We both sit up frong and LO sits in back by herself. I didn't realize people sat in the back with them until we took our 6 hour drive home for the holidays and everyone asked if I sat with her. She does fine on her own, there are only a few times she cries or fusses but that is usually when she needs to be changed. She doesn't like a messy diaper regardless of being in the car, so I don't think it is her sitting back there by herself. Do what makes you comfortable! There are a lot of things I didn't know people did because I don't have many mom friends and live far from home, so I find these things out after I don't do them!
  • I always ride up front, but the passanger side lays back perfect if he loses a nuk or needs something.  I mainly do it because we ride an hour in the morning to work and home at night and he is back there by himself and there isn't anyway else so I wouldn't want him to get used to Mommy with him in the car.  I also have a mirror that he faces so I can see him and that he thinks there is someone with him :)

However, on long rides when he isn't due for a sleep... I would ride back there.  I wouldn't say it is spoiling him and you need to do what is best for your situation.

  • We both ride in the front and DS is totally fine with it. The only time he loses it is when he gets hungry. That's when we pull over somewhere so I can nurse him. We also have one of those mirrors that attach to the back seat so I can see him while I'm in the front.

  • I ride in the back because LO doesn't like the car seat and needs to be distracted. It makes for a better car ride.

  • DS sleeps the whole time.  We both sit up front.  Every once in a while I check on him, and if I need to, I climb in the back.

  • We both ride in the front and DS is in the back. I usually give him a bottle of bm to drink which is propped up in the car seat. That keeps him happy. He usually then falls asleep

  • Well it certainly looks like we are in the minority LOL!  I appreciate your responses as it is something I have been wondering about for a while now.  Maybe we'll get a car that doesn't require one to ride with their knees in their ears to be in the front, one day......

  • If DD is in a good mood, we both sit up front. If she's having a fussy day, then one of us will sit in back. Usually she falls asleep, so more often than not both of us are up front.

This is us also. DS has more than enough people to keep him occupied when we're in the car :)

  • lincoln hates the car with the fury of a thousandburning suns. seriously. he screams his head off. we still don't sit back there with him when we are both in the car because that is not the norm and i dont want him to be accustomed to something that is rare. not because he'd be spoiled but because i think for us it makes it harder on him. i was so bummed to learn he hated the car after people telling me for so long while i was pregnant that babies love the car. sigh. LOL!

  • I ride in the back every time we are both in the car. He hates the carseat, and I like that I can entertain him, distract him, and even nurse him while I'm back there with him. If he falls asleep, I will then climb into the front but our norm is definitely me in the backseat. You're not alone! :)
