Parenting after a Loss

WWYD play groups?

Loretta enjoys watching big kids play. Since its cold and we can't do the playground thing right now, I was thinking about checking out the play group at the local community center.  Am I going to look like a dummy walking in there with a six month old?

Obviously, she doesn't play with other kids at this point but I like the idea of us getting out of the house and being around people.   All I could glean from the description on the website is that the group is targeted to SAHM, home schoolers and daycares.  And they listed their upcoming Christmas party for ages 0-5.

So what do you think? Good idea, dumb idea?

  • It doesn't hurt to check it out! Maybe you'll make a few friends for yourself too! I would try it. S loves watching big kids too.

  • I think it sounds like a fun idea.  Why not just go once and see how she does.  I fully believe C learned to sit up, crawl, etc., from watching the other babies at daycare.

My only concern would be taking your LO into a group of kids during cold and flu season.  So this would probably keep me home.

  • Sure, why not?

Also check your local rec center for things geared toward babies. I started B in Kindermusic as soon as she was eligible at 3 months. She was absolutely the youngest there and couldn't really do any of the holding instruments or whatnot, but she liked the other kids and I was desperate to get out of the house.

  • I don't think it's dumb, a group of the moms I met in childbirth class and I are starting a playgroup together and our LOs are all 4-8 weeks. We already go on weekly walks together and the babies completely ignore each other, so your LO is mire ready in that sense. For me the playgroup is helpful to us, gives us a chance to talk, and we are bringing in someone who teaches developmentally appropriate play for their age.

  • I would check it out. Ro loves other kids! We've been going to Baby Time at the library and to Stroller Strides since she was six weeks old. It's good for both of us.

  • I think it's a good idea but I get your apprehension. I feel the same way about some of the Mom's group activities here. I asked on their forum and they said to bring her to anything and that the group is sometimes more for the moms.
