When to go into pedi?

On Friday night late/early Saturday morning, Will woke up with no voice and tons of congestion. He still has no voice and now has a dry cough to go along with all the snot. He's got a low-grade fever; it's never gotten above 99.5 and he's not acting like he feels great. He sounds incredibly pathetic with no voice Sad

The reason I'm not rushing him right into the pedi is he always seems to pick up something else when we go in there...so unless we need to be seen, I'd like to try to avoid catching anymore germs! If it were your kid, when would you go in?

Re: When to go into pedi?

  • Nope, I wouldn't at this point.  DS had a mild case of Croup a few weeks ago, and it started sort of like you're describing.  Woke up waaaay early one night, said a couple times that he didn't feel good and gave a couple "fake" sounding coughs.  Next night, woke up congested and really coughing, to the point he was crying because his coughs were hurting.  His voice was becoming hoarse that night.  No fever, though.

That second night was a Friday night, and Saturday he got progessively worse, to where by afternoon his cough had become "barky" like a croup cough, and he started running a fever.  It got up to 102.5 by that night.  We did a bunch of googling, and were easily able to confirm it was croup, and that it was mild (no wheezing/whistling sounds while breathing, and no trouble drawing breaths) so we treated the fever, which lasted all weekend.  By Monday we went ahead and took him in, since he still had the fever, and Dr confirmed croup "Plus any number of the 28 viruses going around" at that time (!).  She said it was mild and he was on the upswing from it and sure enough by the next day the fever was gone and his cough was sounding much better.

Anyway I'm not trying to alarm you, but just wanted to mention that it *could* turn into croup.  Check askdrsears.com for info about croup, but even if it is that, there's really no need to take him into the doctor unless he's having a hard time breathing (that website will explain what to look for).

Agreed, I think this is going to turn out to be croup in the end. Hopefully he'll just do fine. This biggest issue is if he's having stridor (a wheezing like sound when he take a breath in) when he's not active or agitated (i.e., stridor at rest) or if he looks like he's having labored breathing (ribs/tummy/throat sucking in when he breaths). It usually gets worse the second night of illness. if he's having symptoms similar to that tomorrow during the day, take him to your pedi and they may give him some steroids to bring down the inflammation. If not, just watch and wait and if he flares up in the middle of the night, take him to Dell ER

  • I probably wouldn't take him in at this point, because Kate *always* gets sick when I take her in for something.  I would bring him in if the fever lasted a few days just to rule out an ear infection.  (Is he prone to ear infections?)

  • Thank you guys, I appreciate the heads up. He's only had one ear infection, so I don't think he's prone to them...I guess I'll just keep an eye on him and take him in later if needed!
  • Strep has been going around too. I would hold off too. Whenever I take in the kids on the onset of something it's always just a cold that has to run its course. I always end up back in the dr. office a few days later because the cold has led to strep or some other infection.
  • ditto amyliisa.  It sounds like when Ocho had mild croup last fall.  Her "treatment" was the general stuff:  keep her hydrated, keep the humidifier going, steam her (turn on hot shower to create steam and sit on the tub/in the bathroom), tylenol for fever, as needed.  It passed after a few days. We went in when she lost her voice b/c we had no idea what it was and the pedi sent us home to continue what we'd already been doing, but with two steroid doses to help clear her up and get her voice back a little quicker.

Hugs to Will.  :( It's so sad when they lose their little voices.  If it were me, I would keep up the home stuff unless the fever went up a lot or he had trouble breathing/made weird noises and then call the nurse's line/go in.  Good luck and good thoughts to your little guy.

  • Sounds like DS a few days ago. He now was croup. Sad We took him to the pedi this morning (the "barking" cough started when he woke up) and she said he has a mild case and that the second night is the worst. Oh joy.

I hope it's nothing and that he feels better soon!!

    Dear Bump: You suck.
