Babies: 3 - 6 Months

rotavirus vaccine and gas

I posted this on the 0-3mo board, but got no responses....hoping I'll have better luck here:)

So my LO got all the normal 2 mo vaccines at her 2 mo checkup w/o any problems, other than the silent scream after the shots:( However, she now seems to be 1. waaay gassier than before 2. her poop is more milky yellow/brown and more like diarrhea (shes 80% BF, and it used to just be the norm orangy/yellow seedy poo) and 3. she only goes like once every 2/3 days whereas it used to be every day, if not at every diaper change. Now I'm fully aware that the poo frequency changes as babies get older, however this coincided exactly with the rotavirus vaccine. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so how long did it last and was there anything you did to help? I just started my girl on Biogaia drops in hopes it'll help her digestive system and the gassiness....

Re: rotavirus vaccine and gas

  • not sure what you mean by milky...if there is mucous in the poop there could be an intestinal issue and you should call your pedi.  It is pretty normal for their pooping schedule to re-adjust as they get older.  I wouldn't give any weird herbal drops though.

  • I use the BioGaia drops as well and it helps my guy with gas and the amount of spit up. Not sure about the reaction though...sorry. Hope things return to normal for you.

  • DD was a super gassy baby.  The vaccines didn't seem to make a difference.  She received the rotavirus vaccine.  Her stool changed pretty frequently, she was ebf.  DS didn't receive the rotavirus vaccine (they don't routinely give it where we live now) but I did notice around 2 months his stool changed.  He is supplemented with a couple ounces of formula during the day.  It is so hard to say.  If several days go by and the bm stays the same then it wasn't the shots.  If it goes back to normal then it may have been the shots.  So really I am no help at all lol.

  • My LO was very gassy in the few days following the Rotavirus vaccine. She was also having several BMs a day, compared to her usual 1 a day. (She is EBF.) These things both lasted about 3 days. I guess I'm not too much help, but if you are at all concerned, I would call your pedi. That's what they're there for! Good luck!

  • Yes, it lasted about a week.  Our ped has now recommended we not give LO the 2nd dose (she's 90% protected already) since that's a reaction to the vaccine.
