So, IL's came over at around 11:45, DS's lunch time. So he didn't really eat anything because he was distracted by them. So Step MIL walks in the door and the first thing she does is touch my belly and say, "how's it going, Mom?" I freaking hate when people other than my kid calls me Mom. And the belly touch, really? They both smelled like ash trays which makes me want to vom. ![]()
So she hands me a target bag with a box in it and says it's for the family. Once DS got out of his high chair, he was curious so he opened it. The elf seriously creeped me out and on the side there were check boxes where you could pick the color of the skin, eyes, and hair. The think is just really strange to me.
So after they leave, I tell DH how creepy I think it is. He had no clue what it was. Here is the conversation we had.
Me: You put it up and it watches the kids for Santa and tells him when they are being naughty.
DH: What happens when the batteries run out?
Me: What do you mean? There aren't batteries.
DH: Well how does it watch the kids and report on them?
Me: WHaaaa???? Honey, Santa isn't real!
DH: (realizing what a fool he was) Leave me alone, I have a headache.
Re: Update to How am I going to get out of this post
Lmao!!! That sounds like a conversation MH and I would have... except I would be the one asking about the batteries, lol.
As for the belly rubbing MIL, I feel so bad for you. That stuff really bugs me. I am no where near big enough to be obviously pregnant yet, but I swear if anyone starts rubbing my belly, I am going to rub theirs and see how they like it.
I hope your creepy little Shelf Elf things finds its way to the garbage can, pronto.

Aww, your DH's comment is so cute. I had actually never heard of it before your post yesterday, and when I looked it up and told DH about it, he agreed that it was really creepy. And now I've heard of it about 15 times since then!
Maybe you could not put it out, or could put it someplace really inconspicuous. If you don't put it out, you can put it someplace super creepy when your IL's are over... like in the bathroom facing the toilet!
ETA: You should have told your MIL that the elf was going to report her for touching you without asking.

LOL it's still in the box on the counter right now. It came with a book to read too and you can name the thing and stuff. Maybe I should name him Creepycakes!

Totes Creepycakes!!
Also, re: belly rubbing...surprisingly very few people have rubbed my belly. And those who have rubbed it have all been family, so it hasn't bothered me much yet.

On the elf topic.... My SIL does the elf on the self with her kids but I didn't realize he was supposed to be "watching" the kids to make sure they're behaving. She takes it in a different direction and her elf gets into all sorts of trouble. Last night she toilet papered the Christmas tree and then put the elf on the shelf with the empty toilet paper roll stuck to his hand. Once she had the elf sitting next to an empty plate with cookie crumbs all around him. Soon she is going to park the car in the driveway really crooked and leave the elf in the front seat with the keys in his hand! I like her take on it better than he's making sure the kids are behaving! Her elf is nothing but bad news! And her kids find it hilarious! I wish I could remember all of her great ideas.

These are awesome ideas!!! My sister does crazy things like this too. There's a website with more things to do. I just don't have the energy. Oh and my creepy elf is named Hermie.
Yes he's creepy but it's nice to be able to point to Hermie and remind DS that he needs to behave.
This was my thought exactly. I want my kids to be good because I teach them that they should be good, not because I threaten them with not getting presents!
He was excited because it was something new in the house. He looked at it while we were opening it and then went back to doing whatever it was he was doing. I'm still holding out hope that when we actually take it out of the box, he will be scared of it, unfortunately, my son is very much like me. Go with the flow. So not much upsets him.
That is a really neat idea. I don't think I have the patience or creativity to do something like that. Plus, DS is so little yet, he won't understand. Also, I think it makes the damn elf creepier if he's hanging out in my house pulling pranks. LOL
LOL DITTO!
Yeah, you're supposed to move it EVERY DAY between the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. It sounds like a pain. I think it's a little extreme for keeping the kiddos in line, but that's just me.
