Natural Birth

New to the board, first time mom...

Hello! My name is Lyndsey.  I'm due May 17th and I couldn't be more excited or feel more blessed!  I am really considering going natural for this birth. My husband is completely on board, which helps a lot!  I guess I am just starting out on this journey, so I just wanted to say HI and let you know I will be reading all of your posts and soaking up all of your positive energy, ideas, and encouragement.  It seems like my husband and I are getting all negative feedback from those we talk to about this (friends, family, etc.) so this board is very refreshing!!

Re: New to the board, first time mom...

  • Welcome!  My first piece of advice is to just not discuss your birth plans because people are full of negative feedback no matter which way you lean. Very few people actually asked me last time if I was planning to get an epi and my response to those that asked was just "I will see how it goes".

  • It's really nice when people around you can be supportive, but if they're not don't let it bother you!  The only time I ever got negative comments about going med free was from people who had taken meds themselves and (I guess) felt inadequate about it.  There were some people I KNEW not to talk about it with, cousins who had long said "why feel the pain if you don't have to, that's so stupid" but I was able to find support from friends and family and especially DH as well as through message boards like this :)

I've had two med free births, one at the hospital and one at home - I'm glad both worked out so well because going med free was amazing and when we have another I will certainly be doing it again!

  • Check out the FAQ in my siggy. Smile

I definitely did not talk about my birth plans with my friends or family.

  • Welcome! I don't post a ton but I love stalking this board for all it's positivity regarding natural birth Smile I havnt gotten a ton of negative feedback but I will say that most people say that I'm crazy for even thinking about having a natural birth. Which is find annoying and ridiculous! But I've learned to just tune it all out and know that what I feel is right for my body is the right choice.

    Good luck!

  • Hi there! I'm pretty new to the board, too, and rarely post, but totally understand what you're saying. I've honestly not mentioned our natural birth plans to anybody unless I have to, because I just don't want to expend energy defending what I know is the best choice for my baby and my body. I'm in the midst of Ina May's Guide to Childbirth and it's really giving me some good talking points (and also totally reinforcing my feelings about my decision). Good luck!
