long naps

Emma usually takes a long nap after her morning feed (usually from 7-10 or so) and then a few shorter naps in the afternoon & evening. Today her morning nap was short (only about an hour) and this afternoon she zonked out - she was asleep from 2:30 until about 5 when I woke her up to change & feed her. After she ate, she was extremely fussy - screaming & spitting up. We finally gave up and allowed her to go back to sleep and she's already been asleep for another 1/2 hour. It's 7pm and I'm thinking I'm just going to let her sleep until she wakes up on her own.

I have a feeling it's going to be a loooong night.

Re: long naps

  • After she refused to sleep all day on Friday, my LO literally slept through the entire weekend.  I could barely keep her awake to feed and was getting worried, except that the few times she did wake up she was smiley so I knew she wasn't ill.  I was actually bored out of my skull yesterday, LOL.  Don't know how she managed to sleep all day and on through the night for nearly 48 hours.  Wonder what today will bring?

  • I dont think it matters.  Some days my baby is barely awake and I am sure she will be up all night but she still sleeps her normal night time 6 hour stretch.

other days, her sleeps are shorter, and she still sleeps her 6 hour stretch.

Newborns are unpredictable.  I know for sure she will stay down for an hour in the day- any more than that is a surprise.

  • I was worried about this too, because I think my LO is going through a growth spurt. He slept off and on all day yesterday, and he's been STTN for about 5 days now. But, I got my weekly update yesterday in my e-mail, and it says that even at this point they are sleeping for like 14-18 hours a day. So that made me feel better. I figure if he's sleeping, he must need it. And so far it hasn't affected his sleep at night. The only time I wake him up is to feed him during the day.

  • I think you will get different opinions on this and it is hard to say what is the "right" thing to do. Like PP said, they are unpredictable. At least mine is - some days she sleeps a lot during the day and sleeps great at night, other times she is awake a lot of the day and sleeps great that night too. And yet other days she sleeps a lot of the day and wakes up at night, other days she is awake a lot of the day and doesn't sleep well at night. I only wake her in the daytime if we are reaching 3 1/2 hours - but I've learned my LOs daytime sleep doesn't always predict her nighttime sleep right now.
