Canned chicken?

I have a terrible craving for a chicken salad sandwich and was wondering...is it safe to eat canned chicken while pregnant?  I know that lunch meat (unless heated well) and hot dogs are out, but haven't heard anything about canned chicken.  Any thoughts?  Thanks!

Re: Canned chicken?

  • I put in in rice with alfredo sauce or even top ramen and mixed vegies i dont trust it unless its cooked but you should be fine its just like canned tuna.

Dr. Google only seems to advise against chicken salad from the store because it has been sitting around.  I think tuna is on the lower mercury fish list, but I've been using canned chicken as a substitute.

  • Canned chicken is just fine.  :)
  • Canned chicken is fine - it's already cooked. Canned tuna (chunk light, not albacore) is also fine 1-2 times per week. Any canned good should be inspected for dents or bubbles in the can indicating damage to its contents, regardless of whether or not you're pregnant.

  • Canned chicken is fine.  For chicken salad, I recently started using a rotisserie chicken from shoprite.  I cut up the entire chicken and make chicken salad with that.  Way yummier than canned chicken.
