High-Risk Pregnancy

Moms who have been on Procardia before, a question.

I am on this for pre-term labor.  I'm just wondering, how much time passed between you stopping the medication and going into labor? Thanks!

  • I am curious about this too, as I am a FTM and have been taking Procardia for six weeks now.  My doctor wants me to take Procardia until 36 weeks.

  • I went into PTL at 22w1d, was on mag sulfate plus terbutaline (some oral, some injections) and oral Procardia for about 5 weeks, then weaned off the mag to just oral terb and Procardia. I was to take both until 36w0d. Around 35w I was starting to see less and less effectiveness out of the meds, and by an appt at 35w6d my doctor said "we will meet these babies within the next few days". Sure enough, went off the meds the next day, and delivered that night. That said, I've also heard plenty of stories where the mom came off the meds and didn't go into labor any time soon after! I guess each person (and pregnancy!) is different!

  • I will say, the only think I think the procardia is doing is keeping the intense ones from last too long.  I am still contracting all day, sometimes two hours worth of strong ones, so it will be interesting to see what my body does when I stop the meds. I have already received the steroid injection for the baby's lungs, so that gives me peace of mind.
  • I agree with Cleo - I have been on Procardia since 30w1d (I am currently 34w5d) and I feel like all it does is dull down the contractions. I have them all day, every day, worse at night, but only every so often do I get a strong one. I will be on it until 36 weeks.
  • With my last pregnancy, I was on Procardia from 30-36 weeks. Same as PPs, it just dulled the contractions, I still had them all the time (basically just kept me from dilating anymore). I was induced at 37w1d for separate issues, but I still lasted 36-37 weeks without going into labor..though I did go from 1-3cm dilated during that time. Good luck!

  • I went into labor 24 hours after my first missed dose.  I also contracted all day long while on procardia, just not as strongly or as timeable as prior to procardia.

  • 17 weeks later... when I was induced.

I had it due to PTL from my cerclage insetion.

I was weaned off slowly by upping the time in between when I would take it by 2 hour incriments. I started at 4hrs and went to 6, 8 and 12....stopped after 12. It took a few days.

  • I stopped at 34w and was in active labor the next day, but I stalled at 3.5 cm when I got my epi.  I dealt with prodromal labor for the next month and was induced at 38w.
