Newborn hip click??

The pedi who examined little guy in the hospital said that she noticed a hip click in his left hip, and we have noticed it too. It happens several times a day, but it doesn't seem to bother him at all. We will have our pedi look at it when we take him in tomorrow, but googling it in the mean time has me a little worried (I know better, but I couldn't resist). The dr at the hospital didn't seem concerned about it, but she mentioned that our pedi would probably want to do an ultrasound to check for dysplasia. Anyone have experience with this?

  • Will's did that occasionally and it was something he just outgrew. They didn't do anything special - the pedi just moved his hips around each appointment and noted it. I want to say at his 6 month appointment, it was gone, but I can't remember. Hopefully your little guy's is nothing too!

  • They're usually self limiting and minor. There are certain things they'll tell you not to do like don't lift them by their legs when changing a diaper. Most of us hold the babies by their ankles/feet to lift their bottom. With dysplasia, you have to roll them from one side to the other like you would to change and adult diaper or brief. You also have to be careful about spreading their legs using a carrier (Bjorn etc). I think swaddling is discouraged too.

It's going to depend upon the severity of the dysplasia how intensive the treatment needs to be.

  • My niece had that and had to wear a brace for a few weeks. She was oddly situated in the womb though so they think that contributed to how bad it was. She was folded and bottom down, so breech. My SIL says the brace didn't bother her at all since she wasn't mobile yet.

  • congrats again on the little guy!  Logan had hip dysplasia.  His issue was a little more severe than the click, and he was in the Pavlik harness for 8 weeks for 23 hours a day.  We could take him out to bathe him and change diapers.  He had the ultrasound I think around 4 weeks if I remember correctly (it is all a blur!).  Try not to worry until you know for sure what you are dealing with, which I know is easier said than done.

FWIW, I cannot recommend Dr. Kahn at Central Texas Pediatric Orthopedic (Dell) enough -- he is FANTASTIC.

  • ps - sent you an email!
  • Your ultrasound will tell you what you need to know, and it's more than likely nothing. It's good that they will check it out now!

DD2 also had a more severe form of hip dysplasia and was in the Pavlik harness for 21 weeks (not that I was counting).  So if it turns out that way, and you have more questions, feel free to send them my way!
