When to stop trying for a burp?

I have a lot of trouble getting my lo to burp. I can tell when she's eating that she's taking in a lot of air, so when I go to burp her I'm expecting a man-style burp...but half the time I get nothing. I try sitting her up, putting her over my shoulder, laying her across my lap (which she hates, btw), and even laying her flat for a minute to stretch out the stomach. No burp, and then not long after she'll either spit up or start crying. It seems the only way to quiet her is to put her on my shoulder. Anyone else have this problem? At what point do you stop trying to burp?

  • My lo doesn't burp much either, and he is always spitting up (doesn't cry though). I will pat his back while he's on my shoulder for 15-20 minutes so that he is upright.....even though he spits up no matter what position he is in!

  • I have the same problem.  For a while, it worked to sit her upright on my knees and jiggle/bounce her for a few minutes before I started patting her back.  It hasn't been as successful lately, but when it worked, it worked like a charm.

  • My DD is a delayed burper. I usually try for about 5-10 min and if she doesn't burp I try again 15 min later. That usually works.

  • So glad that you posted this! I'm having the same problem with my LO. I try mulitple times while she's nursing/getting her formula supplement and I get very little. She sometimes spits up or lets out a huge burp, both scare her and she ends up crying. Sometimes I get nothing and then after 30 min or so I try to put her down she usually wakes up 10 min later crying and it can take another 30 min or so for her to burp. I'm at a loss and we don't see the Dr for another 4 weeks for her 2 mo check up.

  • If my lo doesn't burp with a back pat, I rub her back and that often works. She never burped until I started rubbing her back.

    This.

  • Same here...bouncing on my knee while patting back helps most times...the bouncing does it by itself also.

  • Thanks ladies. I'm trying anything I can to see what works best. So far bouncing while trying to burp her on my shoulder has worked pretty well. But according to my DH, I just don't pat her hard enough lol. My excuse..."she's a baby! she's fragile!"
