Re: Tree Poll

  • This is the first in 4 years that anyone has seen our Christmas decor, yet I put it up every year because it really helps get me in the spirit of Christmas..even though I know we wont be here on Christmas :)

  • Nobody ever sees our tree but I love to put it up anyway but you would not be a Scrooge if you do not put one up. This is actually the first year I have gotten it up before the middle of December!

  • I voted no, because everyone is different and you have to follow your own rules, not those of society.

That being said--is there any reason you don't like Christmas?  I'm not Christian (or religious at all), yet I still love this time of year; it has a feeling of giving and hope to the season, and its an opportunity to see lots of friends and family.  I decorate because it puts me in the mood of giving, even if it is a hassle.

  • Do what makes you smile, if you don't enjoy it don't do it. Personally, the tree makes me smile, it gives me hope because I think of the future Christmases I will spend with my DH and our children.

Oh no - I absolutely adore Christmas! I just hate dragging all the boxes from the basement, struggling to unravel the lights, putting the hooks on all the ornaments, dealing with the sap all over the car, trying to keep my 3 dogs away, watering it, worrying about my house catching on fire, blah...blah...blah...Not to mention taking it all down after Christmas.

And to top it off, the only one who sees it is us.

I LOVE Christmas and have been listening to Christmas carols for a week already. It's the tree and decorating I just can't get into.

We also don't have company for Christmas but I decorate anyways.  We don't go crazy but we put up a tree and have a wreath for our door.  I like the cozy, nostalgic feeling it gives our place.  I also have decorative bowls of pine cones that smell like cinnamon!  Mmmm. :)  Put your tree up girl!

Side note- I can't stand those huge plastic inflatable things people put in their front yards.  WTH?  Does *that* make me a scrooge?

NO WAY!!!!! I hate those fvcking things with a passion.

  • Ha! We could turn this into a Christmas pet peeve post.

I hate the old-fashioned plastic Santas and snowmen that people crowd their yards with. Honestly, some lady down the road has over 100 of those damn ugly things in her yard.

This reminds me of something my mom did a few year ago when she was still teaching. Some snooty lady in her department started complaining about all the things she considered to be tacky holiday decorations. After the lady left the room my mom suggested that everyone in her department go home and dig out examples of said decorations and then the day before Christmas break cover her room with them. So they did it. And the lady.was.piiissed.

Anyway, I hate the giant inflatables too. I also don't like the plywood cutouts of gingerbread men, the nativity scene, Snoopy, etc.

And to answer your original question: put it up if you'll get joy out of it. Don't do anything because you feel you "should". If it's more of a pain in the a$$ than it's worth, don't bother. I have my tree up, but only because I wanted to put it up. We don't have people over for the holidays. I just like looking at it when I walk downstairs in the morning.

Aren't they awful?  My mom's strange neighbors have TWO for every holiday that they keep up for weeks at a time.  It's so tacky and they look like crap all deflated during the day.  I want to go on a inflatable yard decor crime spree and stuff them all in the trunk of my car.

Bahahaha!!! The first time DH took me to meet his mom he said, "wait till you see my mom's neighbors house"  We turned the corner and  I was not quite prepared for what I would see.  There was one of those inflatable things for every holiday plus some.  And it was nowhere near any holiday.  I was like OMG.   Now every time we go to Home Depot DH threatens to buy one and put it in our yard.  LOL  I dont get it, they look ridic inflated, let alone during the day when they are flat....

  • My neighbor started decorating his yard with all manner of hideously tacky things on October 23. More than a week before Halloween! Plastic candy cane fence with lights... giant plastic snowmen... enormous plastic ornaments hanging off the porch... big white swirly light-up Christmas trees... the works. And in the middle of it, he put a plastic ghost holding a jack-o-lantern. You know... for Halloween.

I love Christmas decorations, but they should stay in the basement until after Thanksgiving.

And to answer OP's question... don't decorate because you feel obligated. Decorate because (if) you want to!

  • I voted no b/c there have been years we haven't put a tree up... either too busy or knowing we're going out of town for Christmas. I LOVE Christmas decorations, but honestly the last few years if I have decorated, its been half-hearted b/c I'm so bummed about still not having kids to celebrate with.

You would not be a Scrooge IMO if you didn't put a tree up.

  • DH and I always travel for a week or two over Xmas (our families all live far away) so putting up a big tree doesn't make sense.  Sometimes I get a little tree, though.  I live in NYC so all the delis have them -- little evergreens in pots or very small cut trees.  Something like that might be a good, low-maintenance nod toward holiday spirit -- don't even feel you really need to decorate it.  Just tie a red ribbon to the top.
  • DH and I did a small tree last year instead of a full-sized one.  I missed putting all of the ornaments out, but decided to do it again this year.  For so many reasons it just is not worth the effort of putting up a full-sized tree in our condo when we are barely home to enjoy it.  I say put up whatever makes you happy!
