Annoyed with GD

So I had a 6 inch turkey sandwich on wheat from Subway for the gazillionth time today. Usually I get a good score (between 90-100).  Today I test myself and it says 115.  I didn't believe the glucometer. 5 minutes later I test a different finger and I have a 98. Anyone dealing with conflicting scores? I've had this happen a few times.

  • You have to be below 110?  That is super low.  If you are just frustrated bc it is a bit higher ( still below limo), that just happens.  Depends on sleep, hormones, etc.  that is why they give you a limit.  As long as you are below your limit, I would just relax about that small difference.  I have noticed that if I don't wash my hands it is higher, but other than that and diet, who knows?  Can't sweat the small stuff.

  • Lvl has to be below 120, but I'm really picky about my numbers, especially when I know what I usually get when I eat this.  My husband says the same thing to me (about if it's below your target it's still good).

  • I'm a type I Diabetic so hopefully, I can alleviate some of your distress. Glucometers have about a 20% margin to play with, meaning that the reading will be very close but never perfect, you can test numerous times in a row and you may get differing results each time. Another factor can be your test site, if you test on your forearm and then immediately test your fingertip, you will more than likely get a different result. If I'm not mistaken, you are 31 weeks and that is very likely one of the biggest culprits to your mystery blood sugar levels. I'm only 14 weeks along, but my doctors are amazing and supportive... they have explained that as early as 26 weeks that my insulin needs will likely change very rapidly (could be daily or every few days) and I will have to be comfortable enough to assess and correct my insulin dosages. It sounds to me though that you have pretty good control... and if it helps you accept your target goals a little better, I'll share mine with you: 60 - 90 upon waking, 130 or less an hour after meals, and 60 - 110 in general. I'm by no means saying change anything in your routine, cause it sounds like you're doing great, but sometimes it's just nice to know that someone else has to deal with the nonsense that you do.

I'm type 1 diabetic too and my endo told me this! Don't sit and get upset over it. They aren't all going to be the exact same. Also under 100 really isn't low. The idea is to have tight control so they tell you that so you keep your sugars pretty kosher. It's a scare tactic trust me! My endo laughed at me this last week because I'm very anal retentive over my sugars and if they aren't perfect I feel out (total perfectionist me!) so he told me STOP IT! You're gonna have highs here and there and you're going to have lows here and there. The whole point being is as long as your not have constant one or the other.

In reality...non diabetics can have a 2 hour after meal blood sugar of 140 or lower...so don't nail yourself to the cross over a 115...

  • My dietician wants me under 130 one hour after meals. With DS, the cut-off was 135 and he turned out just fine. :) So I think 130 is a really strict requirement. You certainly shouldn't be upset if you're numbers are under the level your doctor required... that's healthy.

Your body is also going to keep changing and as your placenta grows, your insulin resistance will likely increase, spiking about 37-38 weeks. So, don't be surprised if your numbers change over time... it's all part of the process.
