Old lady names... how old is too old?

I like old lady names. And while I really don't care what other people think, I hate that we might name our little girl something that everyone will have a sour reaction to because it just doesn't seem appropriate for a little one. Are there any old fashioned names that you think are TOO old?

My fave is Edith (nn Edie) - I know that dixee.deluxe's DD is named this - and while I don't think Edith is too old, I wonder about some of the other names on my list.

DH's current favorite is Pearl. While it's growing on me, I just don't know that I can picture a little girl named Pearl, haha. Thoughts?

  • We love the name Edith - our first daughter was originally going to have that name, but after seeing our daughter on the U/S we decided on Abigail. Pearl would make a good middle name. I personally would not name my daughter Pearl.

  • I love it! That was on my list if I was having girls except we would spell it Edythe so that it could be shortened to Edy easily. I like the way that looks better too. Either way it is a great name.

  • I love "old lady names".  I think they're really classic and timeless, and our first daughter will have one of those names (it's also a family name).  I think Edith is really cute, especially with Edie as a nn.  I like Pearl- when I hear that name I think of that Funny or Die video with Will Ferrell, "The Landlord".  The little girl in the video is named Pearl.  You should watch it if you haven't seen it, it's pretty funny.

I love the landlord video! I actually think that is part of the reason DH likes Pearl...!

  • I personally like old lady names.  some of the cutest little girls I know are named Hazel, Abigail etc. our girl's name is probably considered old lady. I like Edith and I love Edie as an nn. it would take a bit for me to get used to Pearl but I think it has potential!!

  • I love old lady names, but I definitely think some are better left in the past.  Like Gertrude or Edna.  Not because they're too old, I just don't think they're pretty names.

I like Pearl, I think it would be cute on a little girl.

  • I was considering Beatrice, but C thinks that is too old.
i wish i could be joking but my dad is the music teacher at a church so he owuld be mad. we had sex, all the time how bad i know but we dont want to wait and he said GREAT OH KAY! and I was really feeling the wets? down there- too embarsed to say- but he acted like man.
  • I like old lady names. I like Pearl, I think it's very pretty and of course I have an aunt Pearl. She's the sweetest most petite lady so it really suits her. I also like the name Phoebe a lot.

LOL I was going to say Gertrude is too old. My grandma- born in 1911- her name was Gertrude. She went by Carmen however which is much prettier.

  • LOVE Pearl. We definitely would have gone with more of an "old lady name" if we hadn't both fallen in love with Fiona the first time I said it!

I love love love "old lady" names. Most of our list is just that (girl and boy).

Love Edith! Love Pearl, too. Edith Pearl would be adorable.

Some of our names: Beatrice, Ramona, Edith, Esther, Astrid, Eleanor, Bridget, Mathilde, Harriet, Agnes, Moira, Vivian, Louisa, Maura, Calista, Colette, Neela, Olive, Augusta, Philippa, Ruth, Greta, Gretchen, Ingrid, Lucille, Adele, Alice, Gwyneth, Rowena, Agatha

Thanks for all the responses ladies! I am definitely liking Pearl more for a mn.

I brought up Olive to DH and he didn't immediately say no, so that's a start, haha. Every time I hear Astrid all I can think of is that episode of the Office where Michael keeps saying Ass-turd! Totally ruins it for me! Love Agnes, Vivian, Ruth, and Alice. Unfortunately DH has vetoed mostly all of those!

  • I don't love Pearl, but I don't think it sounds any more old ladyish than other names that are popular right now.

I actually knew a girl named Pearl when I was young.
