August - Old-fashioned or Hippy name?

Hi everyone! 

My husband and I really love the name August for our LO if it's a boy... it's the name of my great grandfather, who was an AMAZING man and I'd love to honor my family that way...

I'm from a German family, and I've always considered August to be an old-fashioned name from Germany (pronounced Ow-goost there... we would NOT haha) but I've heard that some people consider it a really, uh, "hippy" name?

What do you think? What first comes to mind when you hear the name August - old-fashioned or hippy? Do you like it?

I thought of this one too and DH said right away, "too hippy." It also sort of reminds me of that movie..."August Rush"

Never liked it until our good friends named their son that name and now I think its the cutest name.  NN Auggie

Neither. I think it's classic without being old fashioned, I don't think it's hippy at all, and It's still uncommon enough where it has a modern twist to it. I love it, I think it's timeless and very masculine and strong. I do not like the nn that people try to use with it though, like Auggie and Gus.

I totally agree. It's on our list, but I'm inclined to not use it because of the nicknames.

Austere...that's the way I would describe it, also having an August way back on the family tree.  It was on our short list.  Would have never associated it as hippie.

Love it.  My sister named her daughter this.  (Also a family name for us).  We were a little put off at first, but of course, it's now a perfect fit.  I would prefer it on a boy.

My first reaction is hippie.  But like Jasper it is an old fashioned name that sounds hippie now.

I would never think remotely close to "hippie" regarding the name.

I like it - I think it's old fashioned but not in a bad way.  we're German and our family tree is full of Augusts and H is now interested in the name for that reason!
