Ok, my mom is the more edgy and hip type mother. She doesn't want to be called grandma or granny, or nanny. Any ideas for more modern or sassy grandma names? Thanks!
My Brothers kids call my Mom Maybe, and my DD calls her Mayday or Maymay. She wanted to be called Maime as is Aunty Mame...ir Marmee like in Little Women.
My mom signed an e-mail the other day "Love, Tutu" which she then explained is a Hawaiian name for grandma. ?
I'm hoping our parents don't "demand" to be called one thing or another; I think it's more fun for the kiddies to decide how to pronounce grandma/grandpa! ?
Seems like a lot of kids end up dictating what their grandparents are called based on what they are able to pronounce at 2, despite what the grandparents themselves might have chosen.
I've known grandmothers named mi-ma (pronounced mee maw), honey, mamie (pronounced may mee), and even bad egg (it started as an inside joke, and ended up sticking).
Why not pick something unique to your mom that doesn't always mean grandmother? As long as its a special name your baby uses for her, I think it works.
My mom is "Mima" and DH's mom is "Harmony" which is Korean. You should look up ways to say grandma in languages that correspond with your mom's background.
I know that Nonnie is Italian and Tutu is Hawaiian but after that I don't know any others.
my mom's the exact same way (she's only 47 and people think we're sisters!) so we've decided on Mia for her. ?as for my dad, we're thinking pops or papi (although my dad says it reminds him of papi from seinfeld who happened to pee on the couch...that's the very same reason i love the name lol).
well i'm not much help. in dh's family, there are already young kids that call the folks grandma and pop-pop. my dc will be the first grandchild on my side but its tradition for the folks to go by grammy and grampy.
Your mom already ruled out Nanny, but thats what my mom wants to go buy. Shes british, and thats what they call their grandmothers.

My aunt's grandchildren call her Teddy. I would have never come up with that, but its cute. And my neice & nephew call my FIL Papa Superman...(now, I am not too sure how that will pan out 20 yrs down the road..just imagine that)
My mom signed an e-mail the other day "Love, Tutu" which she then explained is a Hawaiian name for grandma.
MIL is a "Tutu" - I think it's silly but I go along with it. It will be a little awkward explaining to DS why he has a "Tutu & Grandpa" but whatever... (grandpa in Hawaiian is Cucu... lol).
My Aunt goes by Tcher-tcher because her granddaughter wanted to call her by her first name but couldn't quite manage the "Sh" sound in Sharon. It's a weird one, but I think it's great because the kid came up with it. It just seems less affected that way.
My Mom is the same way. She goes by Mims. It was a grandmother in some old movie she liked. I have heard of Lolly for grandma and Pop for grandpa. Zsa-Zsa (like Gabor) is another friends. Two Mama is another friend's. GD and GM are what a friend calls his grandparents...
Re: Grandma names??
my friend calls her mom G-ma.
You could look up how to say Grandmother in different languages. That might help you find something "prettier" and not so "grandma" sounding! LOL
Let's try this again...

DD calls my mom Meme (Mimi) and my MIL Maama. ?Maama was decided by my oldest niece who couldn't say grandma...and it stuck!

Haha! It actually fits her, I'm sure it'll be shortened to Gram or G-rama though
