Does your family drink a lot on Thanksgiving?

Is it like Christmas?  Growing up in Ireland Christmas was always a huge piss up and the day after Christmas was the biggest night out b/c the bars were closed on Christmas day!  that may be different now though, IDK.  We don't celebrate thanksgiving there obviously.

I was thinking b/c of the whole midnight shopping thing.  Or even 5am shopping.  It always seems so at odds with a holiday to me.  Even though I don't even drink anymore.

eta:  I edited the poll b/c it doesn't really make sense to answer for your whole family.  I guess I just mean 'in general' but changed it to you.

Re: Does your family drink a lot on Thanksgiving?

  • Dh's family drinks slowly all day. They started with mimosas and ended with pomegranate margaritas. My family doesn't drink at all.

  • I think it's our normal holiday. I think we went through 5-6 bottles of wine and a case of beer. That's for the whole family.

  • There was soda, tea and water for everyone and 1 bottle of wine my sister drank most of by herself.  She is the only one who drinks.  My mom sometimes will try a glass but she never really sat down much yesterday until after all the family left.

  • Depends on which side of the family we're speaking about. One doesn't really drink at all, the other side does.  But, no one actually drank anything yesterday.

  • Yes,m we drink as does our family.  We went through 5 bottles of champagne alone yesterday.

The shopping - remember, not everyone does that!  No one in our crew went out shopping last night or today.

  • I don't even think we finished a bottle of wine last night!  Too hard to drink much with a later dinner and everyone needing to drive home.  Or maybe we just didn't finish a bottle b/c I wasn't drinking too. ;-)

  • no, we just eat :P

seriously,  it must be traces of the old world because my irish side of the family thinks holidays=celebratory drinks.  it's not a drunken party but it's never too dry either.  dh's family same thing come to think of it w/ more of a presence of wine.

  • There are always options of adult beverages at my mom's.  I didn't drink there this year, though.  I had four glasses of wine at a friend's house, though.  LOL.

If we go to DH's side of the family, all of their "celebrations" are dry.  Now THAT is where I could use some booze.
  • I answered for myself (1-3) but I'm not a heavy drinker, so more than one is a lot for me. But with other family members, yes, Thanksgiving is a drinking day along with most holidays or family get togethers.  None of us are really into the Black Friday shopping, though.  Or if there is any shopping, it's Friday afternoon - not the heading out at in the middle of the night nonsense.  :)
  • So drinking *while* shopping is totally out of the question huh?! ;)
