Anyone have the Tyke Light nightlight??

I need to get a nightlight for DS' room (We cosleep at night and are hoping to move him to his room at night sometime next week!)  We keep our room pretty dark - we have a nightlight but it's very dim.

I want to get a nightlight for his room that isn't super bright, but bright enough for him to be able to see if he wakes up or needs to come and get us.

If you have this, do you love it/hate it?  Why?  I like the idea that it is portable and rechargeable and it has pretty good reviews.

Thoughts?

Re: Anyone have the Tyke Light nightlight??

  • DD just sleeps in the dark, light from the neighbors comes through the windows.  I have been looking for something too that doesn't plug in or has a cord that I could put behind a bookshelf because I don't want DD to play with it.  It seems to me that having a Dora one or something would just attract little people, even the plain one we got at lowes attracted her attention.
  • We have it, but don't use it right now since DS seems to prefer a dark room at this point. It is neat and I like the idea thta he can carry it with him later if he wants to.

It does not provide a lot of light, though, in terms of illuminating the room. The Tyke Light itself is pretty bright, but it doesn't really cast any light., KWIM?

  • I LOVE it!  We have the Tyke Light, Jr. which is battery operated, and I like that there are no cords (and we have told him that he can only press the button ONCE so that it stays on timer, and if he pushes it more than once, it could break.  Poor kid . . .)

The tricky thing is that there are 3 kinds: the original Tyke Light, the Tyke Light Buddy, and the Jr.  The original is a great idea, but bad design (IMO) with the cord, etc.  The Buddy is a good idea in theory, but I ordered it several times from several different places, and they KEPT SENDING the original, it made me crazy!!  So finally I found the Jr. on walmart.com, and actually I'm glad I went with the battery operated one.  The battery lasted (for us) about 2 months, which isn't bad.  It takes 3 AAAs.

It's great because he can turn it on whenever he wants, and it goes on for 15 minutes.  The downside was that the power button doesn't glow or anything, so in a dark room, he couldn't see to turn it on!  We solved that the second night we had it by cutting a tiny corner of Velcro and putting it over the button so that he could feel the texture and know to press there.  It worked perfectly, and now he sleeps with it right on his headboard!  (It used to go right in bed with him, but since we keep it on the timer setting, it would "get lost" under the covers or whatever because it would go dark and then he couldn't find it in the middle of the night if he wanted it!).

GL!  Let me know if you have other specific questions!

ditto about the part that it's bright, but doesn't illuminate the room full blast.

  • Great info - thanks ladies!  I just ordred the Jr one from Walmart - it was only like $10 + shipping, so this way we can try it out and see if it's what we are looking for.  If he loves it, I can buy the rechargable one.

Thanks for the info about the Original vs. Buddy - I didn't even know that there was more than one version!

  • Love it! The tyke light has no cord except when charging during the day, I don't know what a the junior model is.

DS likes a dark room except when he wakes up and wants to come and get us. It is easy for him to turn on and there's no risk of electrocution. He leaves it by his bed and turns it on if he wants to go and get us.

?BTW when we share a room when travelling I use it to go into the room after he's asleep. Sometime she will wake up and sleepily say "Turn off my tykelight!".?
