High-Risk Pregnancy

Guess I have to do NSTs this time :(

I had GD last pregnancy but was not treated any differently than I was with DS1 (with no GD).  I'm on  insulin this time which apparently means I have to start weekly NSTs at 34 weeks. So bummed.  This is such a stressful time for us... it's my busy season (I'm a SAHM with a home business), adding a baby before we meant to (oops), have to move asap (our place is being sold), trying to buy a house asap and now add more doctor's appts?  Totally sucks.

The nurse had just told me my blood pressure was too high and she was going to come back to take it after my ob came in.  So ob comes in and is like "Ok, so you have to come in for NSTs twice a week soon."  I laughed and was like "You can the nurse not to bother retaking my bp now! Ha!"  Thankfully my bp was back to normal the second try and my ob knocked the NSTs down to once a week rather than twice since I'm not on very much insulin.

Well.... I guess I'll try to make the most out of the once a week forced breaks for an NST??

Re: Guess I have to do NSTs this time :(

  • I had my Glucose test test today the 3 hour one. They checked my fasting on the machine there in the room and it was 95. they had to send the other three draws to the lab which will be back friday. I already know I failed bad so just waiting to see how they want to treat it. With DD I didn't have any extra testing after my diagnosis. But now I'm on bedrest and have to be out of work. So I know how you feel with the being stressed. We had to move in with my mother inlaw and we have a toddler. So stress i guess is nothing new. Good luck on the home search and enjoy all the crazy weather they are predicting for the west coast. We have flooding here. Fun stuff.

  • Hi Mama Jan!  I don't have any experience with GD, but I'm also getting NSTs (twice a week).  They took me of work so I really have nothing better to do.  I just wanted to say I'm sorry that you're so busy and wish you the best of luck during this busy time.  I definitely think you should see your NSTs as a needed break!  By the way, my bp's are always high at the beginning of my appointments, too.  Wishing you the best of luck!

  • I'm sorry, I am starting these too and they do stink.  I just read in a magazine tips for getting the most accurate BP reading.  1) no caffeine or alcohol (ok not a stretch on the second one lol) 30 minutes before hand 2) sit in a chair, back straight and feet on the floor, calmly breathing before getting tested 3) hold the arm that will tested so that your elbow is level with your heart and last test on bare skin, not over a shirt.

I sympathize. I honestly don't really mind the GD diet... it's the "rest" of it that is hard for me... packing my lunch and two snacks every day for work (I work across multiple offices, so I can't just leave snacks at my office). Staying up to eat my last snack to help my morning numbers. Remembering to test 4 times a day (at exactly one hour after eating!), eventually (probably) taking insulin twice a day and then the weekly NSTs that come with that.

Don't get me wrong... I understand completely that there is nothing "convenient" about being a mom. And I am happy to do all of this to keep my baby healthy, but it's certainly not easy. And while the NSTs are kind of nice because you get to sit and focus on little one for a few minutes each week, plus it's reassuring to get the extra monitoring- they are certainly a chunk of time out of your life!
