Oh formula, why can't you be easy?
We were on Enfamil Gentlease, which solved the gas & fussiness but he spit up a lot more. We switched to Similac Sensitive, which he spits up less, but it's so much thicker! The worst part is he isn't pooing as often and is really straining. I'm thinking the extra spit up is better than the constipation if it's one or the other.
Anyone else have a similar issue? Any suggestions? We've given it almost a week...should we try another brand?
Re: Formula, constipation, and spit up...
We're using the powder too. His spit up looks almost like cottage cheese sometimes now...that thick. It was thin and watery on the Gentlease, but after every feeding. Which formula did you switch from?
He's definitely bothered and trying to poop. He turns bright red, gets all scrunched up and grunts, tries, but nothing. Then he whimpers. I know they can safely go several days in between poos but he is definitely uncomfortable. Maybe I just need to ride this out while he adjusts. It's good to hear Emmy is on it without issue.
ETA: I LOVE that pic of her from your newborn session, btw.

My pediatrician told me we could put a teaspoon of prune juice in their bottles and help with the constipation. Maybe try that?
We only switched this week, so I know it's still early to definitely tell if he'll adjust well to it. Gerber is next on my list to try though.
I have a call in to the pedi, just because of the consistency, and will ask about the prune juice too. Thanks!

Similac makes a sensitive formula specially geared toward spit up. Maybe give it a try.
Also, our pedi told us that some babies can go up to 7 days without a bowel movement. It's normal, especially since you are switching formulas. Also, straining is normal and doesn't necessarily mean your LO is constipated. Some babies just do that. If it comes out in tiny pellets (think rabbit poop) then your LO is constipated. Straining and not going for a few days does not necessarily mean constipation.
