Parenting after a Loss

How long between first steps and walking??

DD took her first steps about a week ago, but she stills prefers crawling.  She'll take a few steps here or there but she still mostly crawls. I'm actually not in a hurry for her to be walking everywhere....it's hard enough to keep up with her speed-crawling now:)   I'm just curious what others have experienced.

Re: How long between first steps and walking??

  • DD did the few steps here and there for like 3 or 4 weeks. Then one day she just said "Eff this I'm walking" and did just that.

So I guess about a month. She was really walking at 11 months old.

But its funny, even now at almost 16 months, and 5months of walking, when she gets very very tired she prefers to crawl.

  • It was about 3 weeks later that DD was able to go from 1-2 steps to walking a few feet. That was on a Monday and by the end of the week she was walking all over the house and there's been no stopping her.

  • M took his first steps last week, now he walks 6-7 steps at a time. All.the.time. So much so that I consider him a walker. He's not great at it, but he does get a smug look after he walks across the living room floor.

  • DD started cruising around 12-13 months and started walking on her own a day shy of 16 months. She walked holding our hand for 2-3 months and would drop to the floor if you let go of her...

  • I'm a pediatric PT so I see LOTS of kids taking their first steps and learning to walk and it varies SO much.  It really depends a lot on the personality of the child.  I've seen some start taking steps with no fear and increasing throughout the day until they're walking within a day of taking their first steps (with many falls in between) and others taking months because they're much more cautious even though they've never fallen.  I would say most often it's a couple weeks between first steps and walking consistently but not really a mature pattern until age 2 for typical developing kids.
