My kid won't eat

Early on I decided to do BLW however, I started introducing oatmeal a couple weeks ago then I decided to try some purees just so he could start getting a "taste" since he wasn't sitting up unsupported nor was he 6 month old (BLW requirements). But he just doesn't want anything to do with food. Hates cereal, hated bananas--he got so mad! And today I let him have a piece of apple in the steak fry shape, he was not interested at all, I made a little bit of apple sauce and you should've seen the face he made, like I was trying to feed him poison! He pushes the food out, and gags continuously!

I know right now food is not for nutrition more like for exploring but when does food becomes necessary? If you are doing BLW is your LO really into the pieces you give him. And if you do purees, did your LO like the food right away or did it take a few attempts?

Re: My kid won't eat

  • I posted the same thing yesterday int he 6-9 m board. This is exactly whatis happening with DD. I know milk should be their main source of nutrition but it so frustrating that they don't like anything specially when you hear how other kids are enjoying their foods. You should have seen DD face whenshe had applesauce and peas......next time i think i'll take a pic...lol....

    It just takes time...I guess...

  • He didn't really eat anything for the first two weeks of BLW. He's much more into it now. He still has clear preferences - broccoli is a fave right now.

My doctor said he needs to be eating for-real solid meals by 8 months.

  • My LO has been eating rice cereal and purees since about 5 months old.  He has gobbled down every single thing that I've put in front of him.  The first few times we did cereal, we made it very thin - almost like liquid.  We gradually added in more rice each time.  When introducing the purees, we added them to the cereal at first.  He would make funny faces when it was something new, but he'd always open his mouth for more.  So far we have done all homemade stuff - carrots, sweet potatoes, apples, pears, and bananas.

Sometimes I worry because I am on the complete opposite end of the spectrum from you...I wonder if I am overfeeding him or if he's going to be overweight because he loves to eat so much.  I think we need to remind ourselves that all of these babies are so different and just do things at their own pace.  I am not experienced with BLW, so I'm no help there.  Just wanted to add that I think it's fine that he's not really interested in the food yet.  I would say just keep offering things to him and eventually he will dig in to something.

  • Just keep trying. It takes some time for these kids to get used to what we're giving them.

I think his reaction sounds pretty normal, actually.

Remember that 1-2 teaspoons/tablespoons is plenty in those first few weeks as you get baby accustomed to this new eating thing.

  • We're doing purees and DD HATED them for the first week. I think a big part of it was the rice cereal. We switched to oatmeal after 2 weeks and she gobbles that up. The first couple puree we tried she'd make faces the first day and then the 2nd, 3rd, 4th day she would spit it back out but wouldn't make a face. Now that she's better at actually eating she eats everything I give her. I even went back tonight to redo bananas which she hated the first time around, and now she loves.

  • My kid loves food.

He absolutely loves apricot, he will go nuts for it. Maybe try that?  I do purees, but you could totally just give him a dried slice.

Even when feeding my kid it always takes a few bites before he remember he loves food.  Keep trying. Once you find something your LO loves, stick with it.  Once LO realizes how awesome food is they wont stop eating.

    Here are things LO loves:

    apricot, oatmeal,peas, carrots,squash

    LO does not like:

    beans,pears,watermelon

I decided to edit to add:

It's all about texture. LO didn't like the second batch of beanr or pears I made, but he loved the first.  He loves the first batch of peaches, but not the second. Then he loved the third.  Maybe think about what you are giving LO.  Is it all hard and cold? Maybe try warm and soft.. etc.

  • I found that texture was huge when we started on purees. I make purees in the blender with some hot water to get them really smooth. Adding some breast milk and oatmeal can help too. It does take awhile for babies to understand new tastes and textures. And sometimes they don't like it even after a few tries. And some days are better than other days. Keep trying.

  • I've been trying solids since 4 1/2 months (due to reflux). DS is almost 7 months now and he still will barely eat anything at all. I can tell he likes the taste of some purees but its almost like he doesn't understand the concept of swallowing food. I keep trying but I don't force it. He'll learn when he learns :)
  • We started giving DD her first taste of purees around 5.5 months, and then stepped it up to 2 meals/day at 6 months. At first, she pushed it out of her mouth, but gradually over time, she learned to love it. And her favorite food by far is the first food she ever tasted: avocado!

My advice: Make sure you are waiting at least an hour after giving LO milk (or formula). Make sure she has a bit of hunger, and then be patient. It will take a little while for LO to associate this strange new food/texture with being able to satisfy her hunger.
