GD- Trouble testing

I've been testing my blood sugar 4x a day for a few weeks now. A few days ago I started having a hard time getting any blood to do a sample. I use the Contour oneTouch which has alternate site testing and I've tried my palm, but the blood does not form a nice little bubble, it pools, thus making getting anything on the test strip impossible.

If this has happened to you, do you have any tips? For my post-breakfast test I had to try 9 times before I got a successful sample (my palm was the original site and I switched to fingers) and am just dreading this will keep happening. TIA.

Re: GD- Trouble testing

  • Make sure your testing site is completely dry and try to increase the depth of the lancet (you can usually adjust it on the side with a dial). Make sure your hands (if testing on fingers) are warm (rub them together).

  • Thanks heie0008. Have been trying that, but will focus more on rubbing my hands together. I tend to jump up and down a bit (helped when I had some issues a couple of weeks ago) to get the blood flowing. I think with the palm I just got myself so worked up that my palms got clammy and made it more difficult.

  • And make sure you are drinking plenty of water!  I always have trouble getting a good sample if I haven't had enough fluids.

  • I am a certified diabetic meter trainer and pharmacy technician. I also had GD when pregnant with my DD.

Your best bets are to stay hydrated, and massage the blood towards the tips of your fingers for a few seconds before lancing. Rotate which finger you use every time, as well as the spot on the tip that you test at (I had a right pinkie dead centre tendancy...) You may also have to turn up the depth on your lancing device, which I had to do as I was also testing 4+ times a day as I neared the end of my pregnancy.

If you have to use an alternate site, your forearm and the top of your thighs are also good spots we recommend to our patients all the time.

HTH and come find me over on TTGP or Working moms if you have any questions :)
