High-Risk Pregnancy

GD - new to this.. a question.

My 1 hour came back at 140, and one of my 3 hour levels were elevated.

I saw my nutritionist yesterday, and began testing today.  My fasting level this morning was 86 (at 6:45, then I went back to bed..) and 78 at 9:45.

I was given 30 carbs for breakfast, I only ate 9.. I had 2 eggs, a slice of cheese and 1oz of chicken with salsa on top. I didn't have the "starch" - partly because I am not used to having it, and didn't think of it until after I input my food.

An hour later, my level was 84. Is this normal? Should I have eaten toast or something, even though I was absolutely full with what I ate? I'm a bad patient. :(

  • You aren't bad, but yes, you have to eat your carbs.  Everyone's numbers vary as far as what range to stay in, when to test (1 or 2 hours), and how many servings of carbs per meal & snack.  You'll get the hang of it; just be careful, it's possible for you to manage the GD with just diet alone and not have to go on any medications or injections!  Good luck :)

  • I kind of did that in the beginning, but then kept on losing weight and my ketones were on the rise, so I made sure to eat enough carbs after the first week on the diet.  It's an adjustment, but you will find the right balance.

  • You're not a bad patient, but you will want to try to get some carbs with each meal. I'm only allowed 15g in the AM, so I usually have a piece of whole wheat toast or 1/2 of a whole wheat english muffin.

I'll have it with cheese, sausage and egg, or sometimes cottage cheese, sometimes peanut butter. You could also do French toast (without the syrup, of course). There are lots of other options, but those seem to do the best for me, personally.

Numbers in the 80s are not "bad" but your body does need carbs, so you should try to find a balance.

  • Thanks ladies. I followed the guidelines nearly exactly for snack and lunch. I'm waiting to test again after my last meal. This is a definite adjustment. :/

  • I'm confused. If you did the 3 hour GTT, then you had 4 blood sugar levels taken. Only 1 was elevated? You have to have more than 1 elevated for a GD diagnosis. Were your other 3 numbers ok?
  • Yes, my other levels were ok, but since I had a 10 pound 6oz son 3 years ago (diagnosed "borderline", with no treatment) my midwives are being much more aggressive this time by putting me on the diet and having me test daily.
