Ferber day 1 - questions

I am sleeptraining for naps starting today, right now actually and have a question.  If he is just fussing, not crying or screaming, do I still go in and reassure?

I had tears in my eyes putting him in his crib. I know its for the best for him and I, but I still hate to hear my baby cry. (I normally feed/cuddle/rock him to sleep and then he naps on my lap)

OK I am going to edit this already.  He fell asleep after 9 minutes. I only checked on him once, holy sh!t!!! I didn't expect this. This kid has been napping only on me for 7 months.   I know its still going to be a challenge for the next couple weeks.

But now a second question.if he wakes up in the next few minutes do I reassure and start over? or do i take him from his crib, keep him up till next naptime and do it again?

Re: Ferber day 1 - questions

  • I think if he sleeps atleast 30-40 minutes that I would just get him up and try again at the next nap time. If he wakes up in 5-10 minutes then I would restart the Ferber interval over.

  • For naps, Ferber says if it's less than half an hour you do the intervals over again. If he's slept for a half hour, he probably won't go to sleep. And in the future if he fusses for a half hour total, he also probably won't go to sleep.
  • We had great success doing Ferber for sleep associations at night, but when I tried to do Ferber for naps a few weeks ago it was a huge failure. Every time DD cried for the max 30 min and just got more angry when I did check-ins (that wasn't the case at night. Then the check-ins reassured her). So I went back to having her nap on me again because it was easier for everyone. Now I think I'm going to give it another try. She's gotta switch sometime, and we now have 1.5 weeks without the nanny while she's on vacation, so I figure might as well try again now.

  • Good luck Kelly, I hope it works for you.

Both naps yesterday were a sucess for me. We will see how today goes.

LO slept 1.5 hours longer this morning..not sure if it's related.

    Thanks for the advice ladies.

  • My first nap attempt today was a success!! I didn't even have to go check on her once. She did gymnastics for a minute or two, cried for about a minute, and then she was out. Here's to hoping it continues.
