Does anyone know

if deer meat is ok to eat. It's been frozen since it was processed and is only thawed before we eat it. My DH before we found out we were prego ordered about 100 dollars worth from a friend. We give some of it away as gifts but there are many nights that he just wants to have a deer meat sandwich and I haven't yet because I didn't know if it was techniqually considered a "deli meat". All the dear are processed with in hours of being killed. The majority of them come from when people hit the deer while driving and my DH's friend is called out by the county to remove/claim the deer and they most the time are still alive when he gets there.  Our county has a no waste policy so it has to be made into food and what not so I was just wondering if anyone knows.

  • I would think as long as it is thoroughly cooked you'll be fine.

  • According to my OB's preferences, all wild game meats are out of the question. We are big venison eaters ourselves but I will not be eating any this year. Even though the meat has been processed and frozen,  you don't know what that deer may have contracted while alive. I would check with your OB before you dig in.
  • I had some deer sausage a couple weeks ago.

  • Are you cooking it before eating it or is it literally like deli meat and cooked ahead of time and not being reheated or cooked?  It is my understanding that deli meat is okay as long as it is heated to a safe temperature (not sure what that is).  I ate venison all through my first preganancy and will again this time.  Most of our meat is steak, so it gets thawed in the am, and then grilled for dinner.  Hope you are able to enjoy, GL!
