Sleep while teething?

Did teething disrupt your LO's sleep at night?

DS has never been a good sleeper but the last week he all of a sudden started sleeping at least 7 hours. One night he did 12.

Fast forward to last night... he was up every.fvcking.hour.

I don't get it. Maybe teething? Maybe he hates me? Ugh.

Re: Sleep while teething?

  • That sounds a lot like my DS, as well. We'd just transitioned him over to his crib, and he had a couple of nights of really decent sleep. Then he started being really difficult to put down, wouldn't stay asleep for more than half an hour, etc. After about 2-3 nights of that, his first tooth appeared. After the tooth was there, we got another couple of decent nights. Now he's back at it again, so I suspect his second tooth will show up anyday.

FWIW, last night I gave him some Tylenol about 1.5 hours before bed and that seemed to help quite a bit. He slept from 9-2, then nursed and fell back to sleep, and slept until 4. I got him back down at 5, and he slept until 7. I don't normally medicate him for things like this, but all the way home last night he was crying every time he put his teether in his mouth, so I think he was in pain.

Hang in there. It is definitely hard, but if it's teething related, it'll probably pass soon and maybe he'll go back to those great 7 hour stretches! (I'd love one of those!)

Were you having any issues nursing him? DS is constantly pulling off and going right back in.. almost like its hurting to suck?

  • I have noticed DS doing this recently, also. However, it seems like he does it more during the day and not as much during the night, so I was attributing it more to him being so easily distracted by the world than I was his teething. I could be totally missing the mark with that, obviously.

The other things that I can definitely point to are that DS's gums felt slightly "squishy" right before his tooth came through. It seemed like he wanted to chew everything in sight, but often as soon as he would bite down on something (even something soft, like a liquid-filled teether) he would whine like it hurt.

And he did bite me while nursing, one time, since the first tooth came in. I hope that's the last of that!
