Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

D&C Question

So I m/c at 9 weeks, measuring at 7 weeks. I was told to pass it naturally but after reading it seems many people get a D&C. It is possible for it to happen naturally? Should I be concerned about needing a D&C after my follow up? I was told to come in a week after the m/c but due to Thanksgiving I have to wait two weeks. The bleeding has become more like a period rather than clots.. Not sure if a D&C is necessary. Also, one more question... I was told to wait for one regular cycle before trying again. In terms of tracking "regular" would I start counting my 28 days from now, my m/c bleeding or am I really waiting two cycles... just some questions if anyone knows:)

Re: D&C Question

  • They will use your follow up to make sure everything has passed naturally.  So, there's no reason to think you will need a D and C, unless there are issues with infection, heavy bleeding (they usually tell you more than a pad an hour), or retained tissue.   If you feel like there are issues or things aren't progressing, you can always call the OB. but, lots of women have natural miscarriages without surgery. Hopefully, that will happen for you as well.

Edit:As far as trying again, I am not sure what that means.  At first, I read it as after one normal period, but maybe it means after two normal periods... I would call and ask if i were you.

I am so sorry for your loss, and thoughts and prayers to you.

  • Thanks for the input. Prior to my m/c I was on track at 28 days. Just was not sure when to plan for the next period, if it would be on track, or if I needed to wait for the next one and one more following to document "normal" with 28 days in between. I guess I am not sure how to explain this correctly. Would I start counting my 28 days from m/c or does this part not count as a period....
  • Your m/c bleeding is considered the beginning of your cycle.  This cycle may be longer for you or may be on track, everyone responds differently.  For me both m/c cycles were just a couple days longer, maybe 33 days.  I would think your doc means to wait out the next regular cycle and then start trying again. That means two periods then start trying but you can clarify on your follow up.  Good luck.

  • Sorry for your loss. There is no reason you shouldnt be able to mc naturally, but as others have pointed out, your doc will be able to confirm everything has passed at your follow up. Regarding waiting one cycle, the first day of mc counts as the first day of this cycle. So you need to wait until your normal period resumes again, and that's next cycle and you can try again. It may be 28 days or it may be longer.

  • Most people do not need a D&C, some (like me) just wanted to speed the process along.  I would wait until you have one AF, there isnt't really any medical need to wait longer.
