Cerclage ladies - how did it start?

I want to start by saying I went in to the OB today and have a peri appointment tomorrow, so I'm getting all checked out - I just wanted to get some feedback from you ladies.

About a week ago, I started feeling vaginal pressure..over the course of the week it has become more and more noticable.  As the day wears on, my uterus feels heavier and heavier and it's pushing right on my cervix.  I don't remember feeling this way with my last pregnancy.  The OB said my cervix is closed but the peri will measure it tomorrow and do some tests to see if it opens/shortens when they push on my uterus.

Did any of you start out with symptoms like this and end up with a cerclage?

Re: Cerclage ladies - how did it start?

  • I lost my son at 22 weeks. I had no idea I had IC. So this pregnancy they checked me out by more appointments and ultrasounds. They measued my cervix at 14 weeks and the doctor said it was at 2.5 which is on the short side. He said he was worried about it and we coud either do a cerclage or just keep an eye on it and do progesterone shots. I decided to get the cerclage because I cannot deal with another loss, willing to do anything to keep the baby in. So I got scheduled for a few days later, and they checked me right before they put the cerclage in and I was at 2 with funneling! The doctor told me I made the right choice to get the cerclage. I was put on bedrest for a week, went to get checked again and was at 3-4 then I went in 2 weeks later and here I am on modified bedrest because it's at 2.4 now with funeling. Hoping it works for me. I am also on p17 shots. I started at 16 weeks. I did not have any symptoms of shortening or anything when we discovered I was short.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.  Thank you for your response - I noticed on here that a lot of women didn't know it was happening before it happened.  By sharing your story you raise awareness of the issue - thanks again and best of luck with your pregnancy.

  • I did have a lot of pressure and discomfort before and after losing my mucus plug @ 19w. They found my funneling @ my A/S @ 20w and I ended up dilating by 21 1/2w (even on BR). I didn't know what was happening, so you just have to be vigilant. I got an MFM when things went south and was being monitored 2x/wk and on progesterone. Best of luck to you.

  • I lost my first pregnancy due to IC and I realize now that all the pressure, lower back pain and discomfort I was feeling was due to the IC, as they say, hindsight is 20/20.  For this pregnancy I got an abdominal cerclage placed at 12w and I do not feel any of the pressure now, that I felt then.

I hope that everything goes well at your perinatologist appointment tomorrow.

  • I was at work and also feeling vaginal pressure and a bit of cramping. My doctor said it was stretching due to me carrying twins. There was no bleeding or leaking, so I thought everything was fine. I got to see her a few days later (on a friday). I had a u/s and you could see my cervix funneling. When I went back on tuesday, she took one look and saw membranes. Thus, I was sent to my MFM doc who did the cerclage at 15 weeks. Good luck tomorrow.

  • Thank you so much for all your responses.  I saw the peri today and she said my cervix is at 4 and there is completely closed (no sign of amniotic fluid in the cervix).  One of the babies' heads is right on my cervix, though, so I'm wondering if that is what is causing the pressure.

I'm now going to be monitored every 2 weeks instead of 4 by the OB and I go back to the peri in a few weeks.  I'll be sure to get myself into that office, though, if I notice any changes before then.

Thanks again for sharing your stories.
