High-Risk Pregnancy

GD question

I have been controlling my GD with my diet and now for the past week or so my numbers have been slowly getting to the point where they are not so controlled.  My Dr had told me that my numbers were looking so good that I could start testing less frequently and then I started feeling really tired and just not feeling well so I decided just to ck more often and sure enough my numbers were up.  I am eating the same as before and my numbers are so high, tonight was 183 1hr post dinner.  They have told me how many carbs to eat and if I eat that amount then my number is so high.  I of course am ok if I eat protein and veg but I have to eat some carbs too.  I was on Metformin for 3 yrs prior to becoming pregnant for PCOS and wonder if that is something that they can put me back on, I stopped taking it after 1st tri.

Re: GD question

  • If you are not feeling well, it is very common for your numbers to spike.  Is it consistent at this point (i.e. more than two of the same meal are high)?  You should definitely try and eat as many carbs as they tell you to eat.  Carbs are an incredibly important nutrient for you and your LO.  If your numbers are still high, they may start you on meds.  I don't think metaformin is prescribed during pregnancy.  I think they will go with glyburide or insulin.  I have insulin - it was creepy at first, but now it is really easy.  It is amazing what we will do to protect our LOs.

  • I just met with my dietician last week and she mentioned that GD is hormonal. I am currently controling my sugars with my diet. She said that may not continue. As pregnancy progresses your hormones change and it is very likely that you may need medication to help control your GD.

  • My doctor told me that GD is not always controlled with diet and the further you go along the more your numbers can go up. It seems like each week my numbers are going up and they put me on insulin. They may need to put you on insulin if your numbers will not stay down with diet.
