High-Risk Pregnancy

Amnio question.

Hello everyone!

I have to have an amnio soon to check the babies lung development.  If the lungs are good, I am having a c-section at 37 weeks because of complications with GD.

Anyway, as I have never had one, could those of you who have tell me about your experience?  Are they quite painful?  I am usually fine with needles, but my understanding is that they use quite a large needle, go through your abdomen and extract amniotic fluid from around the baby.  Is that correct?  Thank you for all of your input!

Re: Amnio question.

  • I've had two - one for each pg..  The first one they had to get a second needle because they couldn't get enough fluid with the first.  The second amnio, for this LO, was textbook perfect.  Neither hurt very much - about the same as any needle stick.  Both were over in a minute, or so.

  • I wouldn't really call my amnio painful, just uncomfortable. I could definitely feel the needle pierce my uterus and it felt like a massive cramp. It was over really quickly though! Good luck!!

  • I had one at 36w5d and it was completely painless! It really felt no different from a blood test and was over super quick. I was surprised at how minor it was. The needle is long but is super thin. GL!
