October 2011 Moms

Onsie revelation.

I just learned that onsies are meant to be taken off (and put on) feet first.  That is why the shoulders have extra material, to accommodate the bum.  Seriously?

This makes so much more sense..  Here I have been struggling to get LO's big dome through the top!  I am happy to report we just had a very successful outfit change with this newfound info and it was a 100 times for enjoyable.. for all of us. Me, LO, and his giant head.

  • Wait, what? That is news to me as well! ::hangs head in embarrassment:: DD flat out hates anything being put on over her head. I always thought that extra material was in case there was a big shouldered kid out there. I'm definitely going to try this tonight.

I assumed it was to accomodate the domes not tushies.....pulling up over the bottom seems harder with wiggly legs....

  • Its funny you mention this! We've been having to dress Allie from the feet up because of the broviac in her chest...haha I dont think I will do it any other way once she comes home!

  • Really? I have never seen anyone put a baby is a onsie feet first. Babies have giant heads in proportion to their bodies, I assume this was the reason for the neck. It doesn't seem like it would be any easier to go feet first, but I'll have to give it a try. Now that he's older he doesn't cry through getting dressed, but it might have helped doing it that way the first couple weeks.

  • Wait, what?  Lol. Who told you that?  The extra shoulder room is so you can put it over their head.

  • I found out through swaddlebee's which is a cloth diapering site. According to them, it was the original intent of the shoulder getup. My LO doesn't like having anything over his head so it is easier fr us. It was pointed out that this way (feet first) will make getting the babe out of a blowout a while lot less messy!

This is true about the blow out! Ds had one yesterday and getting his onsie off was a nightmare with it covered in grossness, off not over the head would have been better and less icky. Ds has giant shoulders though, idk if he will fit out that way...

  • There is no way I could fit the neck of a onesie around DS's butt and body-- his belly is too wide!  I just bunch up the onesie in my hand and put it over his head, it never even touches his face.

  • I didn't know this and DH just looked at me like I was nuts when I told him... we'll have to try it.  What about getting it over the diaper or do you put that on after?

In cases of extreme blowouts I call the onesie a loss and just cut it off with safety scissors.

  • Me too, lol. I was avoiding using onesies because putting them over his head enraged him! I only used his zip up sleepers. Then, just recently I tried putting a onesie on feet-first and voila! Easy. Now I have a lot more clothing options. :)

haha- i've done this on occasion if it wasn't particularly cute...onesies are so cheap, anyway.
