Card ettiquette (darn last names!)

"Jane Doe" and "John Smith" are married.  Jane goes by "Doe-Smith."  John has a child with the last name "Smith" and Jane has a child with ex's last name, "Baker."  How do I address this card?  I feel like if I say "The Smith Family" it leaves Jane's child out.  Should I just put everyone's first names...?  (The "Doe's" are my bio-family, not the Smith's).

Also, Jane's sister, "Betty" is married and goes by "Doe-Black."  Can I write Mr. & Mrs. Black...?

I hate blended families when it comes to writing cards!

Re: Card ettiquette (darn last names!)

  • I grew up in a blended family and learned to address the cards with two lines. Top line is mr and mrs joe smith. Second line includes first name only of children (Janie and Johnny). Third line is the address. And I'd just use the husband's last name on the first line and not hyphenate anything.

  • John Smith and Jane Doe-Smith and family  or Mr. & Mrs. John Smith and family is how I would handle the first.  Second would be Mr. & Mrs. Black or separate out as before.

  • I would go with Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Family and Mr. and Mrs. Black.

  • In the minority here but I would go with the Doe-Smith Family and children's first name. It is all inclusive and reconizes every member. We are not a blended family but I kept my last name and the kids have our name hyphenated and I find it incredible rude and old fashioned ( not that I'm upset because some people are set it in their ways and I expected it) when people address this to Mr. And Mrs. DHslastname. We prefer the X-Y Family. Same with your second family, use the hyphenated name as it includes both named of the people in the family.
Eta sorry for all the typos. New phone and baby is waking up.

  • I hyphenated my name, and it irks me (not too bad) when I get stuff that's addressed Mr. and Mrs. Smith. When I am out places and if I feel I can make a light hearted joke about it I will say 'its Mrs. Doe-Smith, Mrs. Smith is my mother-in-law.'

If I was addressing the cards formally I would write:

    Mr. John Smith

    Mrs. Jane Doe-Smith

    Master Junior Smith

    Miss Janeschild Baker

    (all on different lines)

    If informally I would have:

    John Smith

    Jane Doe-Smith

    and family

    Or even more informally:

    John, Jane and the Kids
