Calgon

Sorry for another post but apparently I can't figure this out on my own just yet.

For those of you who use Calgon water softener in your diaper loads, what kind is it? (powder, liquid, tablets) And how do you use it?  Should I just combine it with my detergent or put it in the rinse?

TIA!

Re: Calgon

  • I think it's liquid. You can also use borax (powder). To figure out how much you need, fill the washer with warm water. Add the recommended amount of softener, then close the washer and let it agitate a minute. Open and feel the water. It should feel slightly slimy (think really soft hotel water). Adjust the amount accordingly. Now add diapers and detergent and you're good to go!

Yes, you want to use it for the "washing" run of the machine. I am not sure about the rinses, too.

  • Thank you for all of your help on both posts!

  • You should be okay to use it just in the wash cycle. Detergent works best in soft water, so by adding Calgon you're just letting the detergent work properly.

When I used it, we had the powder. It wasn't for diapers, though, it was just for general laundry.

  • I use the calgon powder (from Amazon) in the hot wash cycle with my diapers. I also use it in our dishwasher to keep the glasses from getting all spotty with our hard water. It works great in both applications.
