When did you move your kids from a crib?

We moved DD1 at about 26 months from crib to twin bed.  She did great no problem.  My little two are now 27 months.  I'm starting to get the itch to redo their room and get rid of the cribs, but at the same time the thought of them both being free in the room is terrifying.  For what it's worth - they both currently sleep and go right down the majority of the time for both night time and naps.  I had a problem a few weeks back w/ one twin requiring more sleep, but they have since evened out again.  I really don't have any need to do this I'm just wanting to hear experiences of how it went for you and when you made the transition.  Also, what type of bed did you move them to?

  • For us it was awful.   I used to have kids that went straight to bed and didn't make a peep until morning and now bedtime has become an hour-long ordeal and naps are a thing of the past.

My singleton is still in a crib (in a room with one of the twins and the other twin is by himself) and I don't plan to move him anytime soon.

We had 2 cribs that converted to toddler beds and we got one regular toddler bed.  I have this super cute vision of twin beds with the letter of their name on each headboard...but I don't know when I will actually do it.

  • My boys are 2y10m and cribs are still working great for us; they sleep well at nighttime and naps and haven't tried to climb out so I think we'll stick with cribs a few more months unless something changes.

  • We just transitioned the girls to toddler beds about 3 weeks ago.  Lauryn was climbing back and forth between her crib and Ava's crib.  So it was time.  We converted their cribs to toddler beds.  It hasnt been too awful though most mornings I would come in the room and their socks woudl be all over the floor.  I think we finally got through to them that they are not to go in their drawers.

We still put them down at 7:30 and we do hear them for up to an hour but they do not get out of their room.  Naps are the same thing.  It could take up to an hour to go to sleep but they will sleep.

If they werent climbing, I would have left them in their cribs.

  • Thanks guys!  I think you have definitely confirmed that I should be patient and live w/ the cribs a while longer.

  • The thought of twin beds and not cribs, scares me! I just have a mental image of a tornado in their room.

But we will probably face this sooner rather than later, since they are so tall! And like to climb...

  • With my oldest we moved him into a toddler bed at 12 months. We lived in base housing and there was no carpet, just CONCRETE :(  Soo we thought it would be better to get him out of the crib before he decides to fall out. With our twins we moved them into toddler beds at 13 months. Even to this day we have to go to their door maybe once at naptime and bedtime to tell them to go to sleep but thats it. They even climb in each others beds to sleep together. Its cute!! Embarrassed   We actually just pushed their twin beds together so they are right next to each other but dont have to sleep IN the same bed...ha!

Good luck with the big "move" when you do decide to do it :)
