High-Risk Pregnancy

GD....insulin advice?

So I have been diet controlled for about the past 8 weeks with GD, but now my numbers are getting higher with the same meals.  My doctor told me this would probably happen, but I was hoping I could control it.  I have an appt tomorrow, and  he said last visit if my numbers went up anymore he would put me on insulin, and start having me come in every 2 weeks. Shots don't bother me, but I can't give them to myself.  Any suggestions on how to make it easier.  DH works afternoons and midnights, so he won't be here to help me.

Re: GD....insulin advice?

  • I did insulin with my twin pregnancy twice a day...before breakfast and before dinner. I'm on Glyburide now but my numbers are getting higher like yours, so I think I'll be switching to insulin soon. One of the great things about insulin is that they can make adjustments as needed that act quickly in your body.

The shots do not hurt. The needle is SO tiny you honestly don't feel it. The key is to make sure the alcohol you used to clean the area is dry and that you take the insulin out of the refrigerator about 15-20 minutes before you use it. Injecting cold insulin will burn, but if its at room temp you don't feel it. The needle goes into your fat so its not deep at all. I don't think there's anyway around you not giving yourself shots. To be honest, I wouldn't want to be tied down that way. I was able to grab my stuff and do shots at baseball games, movies, shopping, etc. It would have been really hard to coordinate that with someone. You can do it and you'll be shocked at how painless it is! GL!

  • I am on insulin right now and I think giving yourself a shot is earier than pricking your finger. I think the pricked finger hurts worse. The first time I did the shot I had to check to see if it was in because I could not feel it. The shot is really easy.

My GD has never been controlled with diet. My numbers keep going up every time. They said it is because of the pregnancy hormones and any stress can make it go up also. My OB said that is why diet does not always work with pregnancy. I wish I could go to my endo every two weeks. Right now they have me going every week and I have to pay a $30 co pay each time. I will be glad when this is all over.

GL, I hope your numbers go down.

  • Being a mom is all about doing things you didn't THINK you could do. You'll learn to do it because it's what you need to do to keep your baby healthy. I had to take insulin with DS and I'll probably end up on insulin this time, eventually. It's not as bad as it sounds- I promise!

  • It sounds crazy and I still shock myself every time I give myself an injection, but it really isn't that bad.  I never thought I would be able to do it and now it is just easy and part of my day.  A couple things that helped me: focus on staying calm and relaxed before you do the injection - just kind of a mind over anxiety thing - it makes it easier.  Then, right before I inject the needle, I do a quick blow/burst of air out of my mouth.  I don't know why it helps, but it makes it so much easier for me.  I think it is a tiny distraction enough to take my focus for that split second so I can actually do the shot.

Good luck!  I promise it is not that bad.  You will really need to be able to do them yourself and as PPs said, you don't even really feel the needle.
